Batman started out a very dark character in many ways. He even carried a gun at first.

While he did have his lighthearted years, he has not been so for a while. The trend towards the modern "darker" take actually started well before the classic graphic novel Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and certainly before Image comics was established in the early 90's.

I'm not talking strictly about Batman as a character. I'm talking about the franchise and how it was affected by the trend to modernize and make superheroes and villains more 'realistic' (viz. Ultimate series of Marvel, etc.).

Anyway, I think it's clearly obvious that Batman Begins and such are based on The Dark Knight version of Batman while the originals are not. A lot of people seem to prefer the easier suspension of disbelief with The Dark Knight but I think a lot of character was lost in the transformation, especially with The Joker.

If you gotta go, go with a smile.

I was commenting on your point that DC took Marvel's and Image Comic's lead with the franchise to end up with our more modern take. That's not really true. Image Comics was not founded till 92 and the Batman franchise had long been going that way. Most people tend to point to The Dark Knight Returns (novel) as the catalyst for this and it was released in 1986. Yet the facts are, these changes were already happening before Miller's graphic novel was even released.

Have you read The Dark Knight Returns (novel)? Jack Nicholson's Joker is far closer to what we see in it then with Heath Ledger. He rides around on a flying doll while gassing a late night talk show's audience in the book at one point. It's not at all similar to how the Joker is portrayed in The Dark Knight (movie).

Anyways, my criticisms of Nicholson's Joker don't really have to do with how "modern" or "dark" it was. I think it was a good (but not great) portrayal weighed down heavily by what was otherwise a fairly mediocre film that has not aged well. Case in point, my favorite take on the character is still the version from the Animated Series (Mark Hamill). You can't get farther away from the work Ledger did then that, yet it's near perfect and I wager will eventually be shown as timeless.

All you would be doing is spoiling a movie trailer. Not a big deal.

Which will be released this Friday as it is. Again, no big deal
