I'm not talking strictly about Batman as a character. I'm talking about the franchise and how it was affected by the trend to modernize and make superheroes and villains more 'realistic' (viz. Ultimate series of Marvel, etc.).
Anyway, I think it's clearly obvious that Batman Begins and such are based on The Dark Knight version of Batman while the originals are not. A lot of people seem to prefer the easier suspension of disbelief with The Dark Knight but I think a lot of character was lost in the transformation, especially with The Joker.
If you gotta go, go with a smile.
Batman started out a very dark character in many ways. He even carried a gun at first.
While he did have his lighthearted years, he has not been so for a while. The trend towards the modern "darker" take actually started well before the classic graphic novel Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and certainly before Image comics was established in the early 90's.
