Batman: Dark Knight Rises (movie thread) - Page 110

I both loved and hated Bane's voice. It fit the segments where Bane made proclamations, but there were several instances otherwise where at least a couple of his lines were virtually impossible to understand.

Agreed on the tone of TDKR. The series has gotten praise for being so dark, especially in comparison to early adaptations. But there's an aura of despair from the opening moments of TDKR that lingers throughout. BB and TDK could be characterized as gritty and grim, but TDKR feels so... bleak.

I thought the action sequences were wonderful and I say that as someone who didn't care all that much for them in the two previous films. The first Bane/Batman encounter was one of the more convincingly brutal ass-beatings I've seen.

I haven't seen TDKR yet, but I really didn't think the first one was anything special. The gap between 1 and 2 was just enormous, so it wouldn't surprise me if #3 fell in the middle.

I read some commentary about how the extreme grimness of Gotham City in the modern conception (these movies and some of the comics) really doesn't make any sense. People would just leave. Gotham is like a third world country in these movies, but there's still tons of people willing to sit around and put up with it. Giving some signs of hope and life would make it a lot more realistic about why people choose to stay.

I don't think this needs a spoiler since it's well documented in trailers and plot details but the Dent Act cleaned up the streets (almost no crime) and in the past 8 years have been great from what they said. Overall the city was much, much better after Dent died.

Gotham city reminds me of Baltimore in the wire. (not physically but like socioeconomically)

Batman comin' yo.

I rewatched Batman Begins earlier this week and I was struck by how artificial and "comic booky" Gotham looks in that film, especially when compared to Gotham in DKR. They don't look at all like the same city. Also, I heard Bane's voice described as a muffled version of Darrell Hammond's Sean Connery in the SNL Jeopardy sketches, which I thought was spot on.

I didn't really like this movie for the same reasons I don't like most modern crowd-pleasers. Oh no, he/she is in trouble. But wait, look who showed up JUST IN TIME!

It lacked the creativity and suspense of TDR.

Also, Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The idea that a bunch of unarmed cops could forcefully subdue a gang of machine-gun wielding, tank-driving psychos is far fetched, even for cinema.

Does anyone know if Bane's lines were spoken on-set or voiced over off-set? The timbre of it sounded very unnatural, like it was coming through headphones while the rest of the movie's audio was in the theater's speakers. It took me out of the moment on more than one occasion, particularly during the opening scene.

1) I did not like the Talia reveal at all. I knew it was coming, so maybe that made it uninteresting for me. However, I think I also didn't like it because it weakened Bane as a character for me. I liked the idea that Bane was this exiled member of the League of Shadows who wanted to do something Ra's couldn't do (break batman and destroy gotham). the reveal that he was really working for talia made me think les of the character. I'm sure most probably don't/didn't feel that way.
2) I like the John Blake/Robin _______ taking up the cowl idea. can't explain why, but it really worked for me. When he ropes into the cavern and bats enshroud him, i got chills.

i felt the same way about 1 & 2 Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
1. totally made bane seem like a mindless brute following orders whereas in the comic book he is a genius confused.gif
2.really liked that nolan skipped the robin route and let "blake/robin/whatever" take over the cowl much better, made me smile

But they didn't have the green, red and yellow suit! Rambo would be furious!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Talia was predictable: I remembered Ra's al Ghul had a child, and it was a daughter, not a son. She and Bruce were lovers (like in TDKR) and eventually married.

The Bat was a little silly.

Joseph Gordon Levitt's character was set up for something bigger, just didn't know it was Robin. They gave him a lot of action, showed great character progression, and the whole angry orphan thing was just icing on the cake. Batman telling him to wear a mask was just beating the dead horse. I'm not sure how I feel about the Blake/Robin name. It would have been much cooler if he said he didn't like his real name "Dick."

It also would have been much, much cooler if the ending was Alfred smiling, kind of like Inception.

Remembered something else I didn't like. Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Batman (or Wayne, don't remember which) tells Blake to move as many of the millions of people in Gotham as he can across the bridge to safety. So, with whom does he show up to the bridge? A handful of orphans. Huh?

holy shit I loved it
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
1) the first fight where bane breaks batman, oh my god that was incredible. No background noise, just watching batman get completely man handled
2) they couldn't say dick because not everyone knows robin's full name so it wouldn't have been as on the nose

ye the fight scene Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
between batman and bane was absolutely brutal. It really also made me see Batman as an equally powerful brutal force once he's out of the shadows and going hand to hand with an enemy.

Did anyone else love the batman shouting "where is it" in this film? It was near the end of the second fight against Bane. He's just pummeling him and shouting at the same time. it was great.
