i really want to travel to brasil sao paulo etc, how is it on safety? not trying to hijack but just wondering. any tips/stories?

vis a vis safety: it's hit or miss. you can be walking down one street, and you're fine. take a turn, and you'll want to head straight back.

that said, if you're staying around jardin, there's nothing to worry about.

First Impressions I haven't felt unsafe at any point and I was walking around town drunk at 2 am last night. Pizza gets 2 thumbs up The traffic and the airport is rubbish and I have spend so much time in traffic it's not even funny, some of it was do to a rain/hail storm, which took out the power at my hotel plus it took tree out with by the ground. Remember to do your currency exchange in the airport as it's a hassle to do in the city. the women until now I'm not impressed, but I'm Scandinavian, so I'm hard to please. And coming from the Scandinavian winter it's insanely hot and humid.

I stayed this week at the renaissance, I think that will become my go to place. also, the name of the cigar place I suggested above is tobaco roma, on santos not to far from the vienna bookstore.

I think you mean Vente Harregano on Avenida Rebouças? Been there a few times and like you, probably the best I have been to as well.

I did that, too, in full professor gear and didn't feel unsafe. I felt like I should have felt unsafe, but didn't. I was with a semi-local, and she knew where we were. Sort of- she was a bit lost, a bit drunk, too. Still that was probably key, she was keeping us in known neighborhoods. When we found the bar we were walking around looking for, circa 2, 3 am, the bartender called out my friend's name. When we came out of that bar, we were definitively drunk.

A fabulous time.

Came back yesterday in -5 and snow, so it's time for a quick recap: The ones worth mentioning Braz Pizzaria in Rua Grauna 125 Good pizza nice vibe, bit of a wait on friday night, but worth it. Frangaria, Rua Gomes de Carvalho, 955 I went there for lunch and had some sort of chicken, their menu was only in Portuguese, so my client ordered, but it was very good and moist, the freid polentas etc. was great as well. They have an nice outside sitting area, sort of reminded me of Italy or France. I'm still trying to figure out, what it is with Brazilians and bland fries. Margherita Pizzaria, Alameda Tiete, 255 good Pizza and vibe, I would say Braz was a little better but not much, and it's very busy on Sunday night. Besides those, I also went to an Italian place in the Jardins can't remember the name, but the food was mehh... and I found very annoying that hey had 3 40" flat screens on the wall showing some sort of tv show (with no sound and subtitles, what's the point?) An Brazilian/Italian place on Paulista in some sort of mall, but it was very popular, but the food was not worth mentioning, way to much cheese on everything. Rocket burger on Al. Lorena, on the day I was leaving for lunch, mostly to get out of the sun, it was a decent burger, but no one mentioned that it wasn't a menu I was ordering, which one would assume as I was sitting down to eat, but they have menu's you just have to ask for the other menu. Sunday is apparently a big going out night in Brazil, which I didn't know, so if you are going there over a week remember to go out to a bar/club on Sunday, as it is a big as or bigger than Friday/Saturday. My client took me to some famous larger bar area in Bibi I believe it was, the bars we went to were all rubbish and they were full of Jersey shore looking people and the girls weren't good looking, my Client was very apologetic as he wasn't impressed either. The girls in the Jardins area around the Oscar Freire area etc. are amazing so many cuties with big big tits, skinny waist, big asses and nice faces, they like leggins, skinny jeans and short skirts, which doesn't make it worse. The clothing seemed cheap compared to SF standards, but I didn't buy anything, as I didn't find anything that said buy me. Depending on what is on display at MASP I would pass on it, as the general exhibit wasn't that interesting or at least not my taste, but if you like classic art go. Bring an umbrella and sunscreen, as when it rains it pours and the sun will kill your face. The traffic.... 3 hours to drive 8km, but when it isn't at gridlock, it just seems to flow.

the winter (for us) is nice, because it is so much warmer there. I get down in July every year, as well, and it can get a little chilly.
