It would be fairer to say that I am more likely to wear a loud, busy shirt than a loud, busy tie. Even with solid, muted shirts, I still wear boring ties.
Incidentally, are you partial to thicker silk? I saw some Drake ties at the Barney's warehouse sale, but passed because the silk didn't feel thick and hefty as much as it did feel rough and almost plasticky. I felt some Kiton ties that I thought had the same heft but a much smoother feel to them.
Ah, plasticy is a good sign! That's the sign of quality gum twill. Of course, without seeing the tie, I can't be sure we are talking about the same thing, but that is not a bad way to put what I mean.
Is this "smoothness" a factor in making a tie good?
Not to me. To make silk really butter smooth, the fibers have to be so fine that the resulting fabric has no body in my experience.
