What is the relationship between suit shoulders & armholes?

I have purchased 6 or 7 MTM suits from various tailors (mostly HK, one Canadian). I have yet to be able to get small/high armholes in the jackets, or at least small/high enough. I am not a linebacker type but I have decent sized shoulders and a big chest, along with a big head, so I have always sought fairly (not extremely) large shoulders on my suits as well. Am I asking for the impossible when I say I want small armholes but decent sized shoulders in a suit jacket? Are these things correlated (e.g. bigger shoulders require bigger/lower armholes) or is there really no connection?

I have pretty wide shoulders for my size but prefer armholes smaller than most would find comfortable, I think. You must push your tailor, because for a variety of reasons - self-preservation, aesthetic preference, ease of fit - they might not want to try. The key to having this work with your build is to have make sure the shoulders are wide enough for you and that extra cloth of the sleevehead be eased into the smaller armholes, allowing you more breathing space.
