Custom White's Boots ... Thoughts? - Page 563

Okay, so now that I am getting ready for a resole of my Bounty Hunters, trying to decide if I should just send them back to Bakers to have it done, or maybe try out Brian the Bootmaker, who has his own very interesting half soles and heels:

I like these a lot, but the main downside is losing the quasi-stitchdown of White's.  Brian rewelts them to look like this:

I do like the stitch down look, but not sure how much difference it makes to me.  Anyway, here's an interesting video of Brian doing his thing on a pair of White's:

i'm a ways off from a resole, but as a superfuture regular i've known about brian for a while, as he has his own thread there in the denim section, and i've definitely considered using him for resoles of other boots. there's no doubt he's passionate about his work, but i get doubts because it seems like not only the welt is different, but also the height of the heel seems more pronounced, and from photos i've seen, the leather stacking and forming of the heel seems a little more rough than straight from White's. he offers some interesting soles, inspired by old catspaw designs, but i'm not sure what the compound is and how it compares in longevity to vibram's soles.

Yes, his regular heel is too tall for me, but he does on occasion do a lower heel, which I'd get.  But like you, still not entirely sure...

Hey linafelt, I've got the Vibram composition half sole on my last pair of SDs. Like them a lot. I looked at my order at Baker's site and the sole didn't have a number - just said "Vibram composition half sole."

Sorry everyone.... i came here looking for a quick answer but i found 550+ pages of posts, so i quit when i got to the 5th page.....  most probably you have discussed about my question before, but i didnt have the time to read the whole thing.

The question is:

Are all those Asian websites showing and selling "Whites boots" really selling original American made Whites Boots?..... what they show in their pictures is very beautiful though.

Is it safe to buy from those websites?... will i get the real thing?...

Thanks a lot in advance for your patience and understanding.

No it's not if it's cheap. It's made by local shoemaker using last inspired by white's.

You could work through this board, White's or Bakers to try to figure out what model, leather, and sole options. etc. are the boots you find on the Japanese web site and have them make one for you custom.

or do like I did and browse all the images in this thread and usually people post their makeups and you can figure it out from there.

On the top right of this screen where it says "Recent Images In This Thread" click the "show all" option.  Then when you find a pair you like right click on the image and open in a new tab.

In the image tab on the top right you will find a link that will take you right to the post, where you can then derive the makeup or search further within the thread on the username to hopefully find said make up.

Finally, if you go this route, post pictures when you get yours along with the makeup you used.

Unless the price is "too good to be true" then there is a good chance it is the real thing. There are counterfeits made of everything, but White's does make a TON of boots for the asian market - Japanese in particular love White's boots, and so there are a lot for sale there both as special runs for retailers, and in the secondary/used markets. Just use your instincts - if they are $100 - they aren't Whites. In general I've seen asian pricing to be, after conversion, slightly higher than the US pricing for a similar item (which makes sense). The main benefit to shopping that market would be if you want one of their crazy makeups - they are a lot more adventurous than most US buyers.

Depending on where the site is based, you may get nothing too! Best to check the genuineness of the site, as well as the boot! Japanese sites are generally fine, bit here Whites are close to $1000...

Thanks.

Generally, if i want Dr Martens, i buy at the Dr Martens website, and if i want Chippewas i buy at their site too and so on (or amazon or ebay if i find good rep stores with nice bargains for the same boots)........ My question about those "Whites boots" asian sites was because they sell very beautiful variants that i never saw in the original american website.

But yes.... analizing the cost/benefit of buying there, i think i will buy whites boots at their original american  site if i ever do (i´ve got my eyes on them).

I´ve had awfull experiences with chinese / Taiwanese websites.... they speak perfect english when you are buying , but when you are asking for a package that never arrived.... then they are chinese and dont understand a single thing you´re saying.....  it makes my blood boil....doing business with them is a russian roulette .

Ok overall my question was answered, and i thank you guys for that.

I wondered about that too. Almost all the builds you see on the Asian sites can be made-to-order. Sometimes there are leathers that only seem to appear in Asia – so there may be (this is purely speculation!) some exceptions or exclusives to specific dealers. But then I guess there are always some leathers that aren't officially listed – and also leathers that are listed but currently not available. But basically most anything can be done.

White's US website looks like it was made with low-res scans of their faded 1965 catalog pics. In 1995. And never updated after that. I guess this is because they have historically always been an workboot maker, not a fashion company. Also, their order books seem to be well filled regardless of their complete lack of marketing (not counting White's coffee mugs and caps;-)

Bakershoe, their most important US dealer, doesn't look much better – don't expect boot prøn when visiting their site. On the other hand, Bakers (again – no fashion but guns, boots and outdoor / hunting equipment) are extremely competent and helpful with all questions regarding White's. The majority of the MTO builds you see on this forum were ordered through Bakers. You can also go through White's directly, but it's not cheaper (actually, it is said to be more expensive), not quicker and doesn't offer more options.

The Asian sites are a great source of ideas and inspiration. Once you decide you want that wild combination you saw on ultrasoundboots.com – say, a black shark / yellow calf Smokejumper – talk to Bakers. They also have a nice build-a-boot website where you can configure all (well, most) options and get a (somewhat inaccurate) real-time preview of your boot and the corresponding price.
