What is Starling?  I've pics of these (they're awesome!) but have never been able to find them for sale...

Unfortunately, Starling are out in my size. Does anyone know what options I might use to replicate (closely or exactly) these in a custom order? I'm guessing ordering the Baker's Oxford (http://www.bakershoe.com/Product/Detail/bakers-oxford-by-whites-boots/) in black leather, black soles and nickel hardware won't quite cut the mustard, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know!

Thanks.  A great shoe; but not in my size either...

That comes out to around a grand. It looks like it might be finished a bit more nicely than the average pair of White's (I've noticed this with a lot of the boots they send to Japan), but that's at least $600 saved if he can order directly from White's. I'm not sure if they have a contract with Nepenthes to only do that shoe for them, though.

That was also part of my thinking. Is the basic shoe a standard White's model in an unusual leather / sole combo? The Baker's Oxford looks close but the pictures on their website aren't very clear...

It looks like it would be a version of the lace-to-toe Lineman model in about a 4" height. I don't see why you couldn't order it thru White's or Baker's.

Ah! Lovely! I guess the following combo will get close to the look of the Nepenthes collab, but $600 cheaper:

  • Thread Color (upper) Black
  • Midsole Double
  • Edge Black
  • Toe Cap No
  • Lineman/Side Patch No
  • Pull Loops No
  • Height 3"
  • Outsole Stitching color Black
  • Toe Vamp Leather Black Smooth
  • Hardware Nickel
  • Upper (Shaft) Leather Black Smooth
  • Sole Vibram 2021 Black
  • Lace Design Lace-to-Toe
  • Counter Leather: Black smooth

That look good, chaps?

I am pretty sure those are made at the Drew's Boots factory in Oregon.

Do you know if they're making those in Eugene or still down in Klamath Falls?

Ever since I found a solo work boot maker in my hometown in southern Oregon, I've been curious about Oregon's shoemakers.

Who's your guy, and do you have any pictures of his work?

In case anyone is interested, I had someone ask about the size of the toebox on my White's Bounty Hunters (single celastic), so I put together this album. Other boots pictured are: Red Wing Beckmans in Chestnut (sz 9), White's Bounty Hunters in Smooth Leather (semi-dress last, sz 8.5), Alden Indys in Natural CXL (sz 8.5), Red Wing 4583s in Copper Rough and Tough leather (sz 8.5).

Sorry for the horrible white balance.

Those well-aged Chestnut Beckman really stands out...

They're actually only 6ish months old...I tend to put my boots through their paces.

Edit:  I've been wearing my White's pretty hard ever since I got them (have probably put 20-30 miles in the woods on them), and all they would need is a quick brushing and they'd look pretty close to new, aside from lace imprints on tongue and around shaft.  That "smooth distressed" is some seriously impressive leather.

Clemons Boot Co. I've not actually been in and haven't been in town for months. Next time I'm down there on a weekday, I want to stop by. There's a chance they may even have closed up shop.

Here's an example of some of their work I found on Flickr.

Here's an article about them. It's behind a firewall, but the photos can be viewed.
