Custom White's Boots ... Thoughts? - Page 195

That SD in dress brown from SLIDE13 on page 1 (!) is what has ultimately inspired me to place an order for almost the same boot through Bakers. I just can't get over how the aging of the leather and the shape of the boot work together. Stellar.

I think I'll have to go with the swing last because of my clown feet and maybe the 269 because of weather conditions and my general lack of care when I walk, but the profile should be close, since his are double leather soles.

I would love to see more of the same boot from different angles.

I still love this boots as this are hand made and i don't expect it to be perfectly made like a computerized machine can do. can you guys spot the inconsistencies of this pair of White's boots? i just notice it today as i look at the above post.
the counter leather, sole lining and the stitch color are not the same.. i will check my Viberg when i get home later.

Mine are similar. It doesn't affect the function. No one will notice unless your boot is on their face (which sometimes may happen biggrin.gif ). The white thread is brownish-grey after a year of wear anyway. I mean, they ARE handmade leather, not rubber Nikes stamped from molds in foreign sweatshops. smile.gif

Ben, the way those counters are cut at different lengths would bug the hell out of me (once i noticed it). Have you contacted Whites yet? I would think that such an error would not be within their QC standards

@ Andy i certainly agree with you, i just noticed it because of the above photos posted by linefelt, @ b-ewing yeah you are right it look like a QC error on their part but so far i am fine with it, i still like it. Well if the SD i ordered two weeks ago will have the same QC error i'll gonna call Baker's and White's attention.

I'm very nervous about the sizing!!! I wear a size 9.5 but i buy 10's because I have to put in inserts.Bakers  told me that I will not need to put inserts in because the build in arch supports in the boot that will support my foot.So i bought 6" smoke jumpers brown rough out on the tor toe and heel with blk rough out on the shaft with blk tongue and brown rough out on stay. 100 lug.

I'm already building my second pair on boot design any ideas from you professionals out there. I'm a rookie need all the help I can get.

I thought you guys might like to see what Obenaufs does to distressed smooth leather. These SJs are about 6 months old. I wear them a few times a week. It's mostly office wear, but I ride my motorcycle with them a lot and have shoveled snow a few times.

This is the first treatment I have given them. The leather seemed a bit "thirsty" so I think they needed it.

I took these pics in natural sunlight, no flash. The darker the boot is obviously the treated one. I really like the look.

Doubt you will need the inserts. The arch support is solid. Sounds like a great boot. Congrats!

THANK YOU!!! This is exactly what I was wondering (what Obenauf's would do to them). This is definitely the leather I am going with next.

Yeah, I am totally on board with the idea of handmade (well, more or less anyway) boots showing imperfections, but it certainly seems like some of what you see in White's "imperfections" is carelessness.  Feel like they should do a little better I guess...

I agree with Baker's. I tried putting inserts in twice (the Packers and the BHs). Both times within about 5 minutes I had the inserts ripped out. Between the arch in the White's, and the extra arch material in most inserts, your foot will not be happy with an insert. White's are designed to fit tight in the arch area and there isn't enough room for what would effectively be a double arch with insoles inserted.

Also, inserts really should only affect the width of the shoe since they add material under the footbed, not to the length. I can understand why you would need to go a 1/2 size longer in most footwear that doesn't have the width options as White's, but if you truly needed an insert, I would go up a size in width in White's before going longer.

My pleasure. It's exactly what I wanted it to be. Tough as nails and shows character/patina. It's a great leather.
