Custom White's Boots ... Thoughts? - Page 189

I think that a double midsole is going to look weird in that build, mostly in contrast with the close trim. I think double midsole no celastic could work, but double midsole close trim sounds weirdly contradictory.

Inclined to agree with hollows, Boogie Nights Might give you a hint of what they may look like, double leather sole without the added vibram looks fine though or the choices you are looking at with the standard edge.

Yeah, that sole combo will be over 3/4" thick. You have to wear it like you mean it! Close trim and the lower toe profile with it might look off.

Not mine, nor the same build as asked about, but gives you an idea of what soft toe w/double midsoles looks like
post #2825 of 5337
Are there any places in NYC that carry White's in wide sizes?

Speaking of soft toes; what are your thoughts on the soft toe with the standard heel? To me they sorta look too much like packers

Don't like the soft toe but you already knew that.

Hi B, looks quite an extreme looking version but yerp, does look like a wide toe'd packer. Swap out the commando sole and the harvest RO is v nice.

Thanks for the replies guys, double midsole with the vibram is indeed far thicker than I imagined.

This is Feckin addictive!

Place this Standard build on Semi Dress today.

I like it...minus the soft toe.

Anyone have any experience in ordering a heel lowered by 1/2"?  I know the standard lowering is 1/4, but White's says you can do up to 1/2.  I also know lots of guys don't like the lowered heel, but for those who do, any experience with how 1/2" looks or feels?  I'd love to see pics if possible...  thanks.

Hi lina^, I own and have owned the standard and 1/4 lowered heeled boots and i much prefer the feel of the lowered, the Arch is still balanced right, it doesn't feel as you are tipping back and strange I'm sure but i like the stability of my feet feeling closer to the floor, plus asthetically it wins for me, just, as long as it's been trimmed in close enough around the heel, depends who's trimming at the workshop! An easy fix though. Double leather and vibram sole on a boot and then lowered can look and I imagine feel wrong, again depends how the heel height gets adjusted to the rest of the sole and who does it. 1/2 lowered, although the idea sounds good (if service boot heels appeal) and I would love to hear about and see some, I do think that until the arch has moulded and flattened a bit that the boots will be out of balance and you'll feel it, could be wrong and just a thought. Cheers. Actually just for info, from experience the lowest heel that looks and feels balanced by White's that you'll get is either when you order a lowered double leather sole or half lug that is cut into the leather sole. Cheers.

Thanks for the info and thoughts.  Yeah, I agree completely about feeling better closer to the ground.  I had a beautiful pair of Viberg 310s with a White's-sized heel, and I could never get used to walking with them, always felt teetering.  I am now on the verge of ordering either a pair of SDs in Horsehide ( I am a big fan of the HH ) or SJs probably in black CXL (I like the SJ look, but really want horsehide, which is available only in SD).  So am looking for a lower heel, though I think you are probably right that 1/2" is too much...

Lina, I've heard great things about the horse strip White's sources for its SDs. Supposed to take on a beautiful patina. You doing lowered block or Cuban heel? Regardless, I think 1/4" would be low enough depending on which sole you went with (269 will get you even lower than double leather, right?)

Btw- saw you posted your HH Vibergs up for sale; sorry to hear those didn't work out as they were grail boots IMO. Nothin beats the comfort of White's tho smile.gif
