univibe,

Those are beautiful! The smooth brown distressed leather is supposed to be second in durability only to the standard brown and black leathers White's uses for the Smokejumpers. Now I have to decide between horse hide and smooth distressed. I really like the looks of that leather.

Univibe88, congrats on some seriously badass boots!

Brian -- Cleaning the boots has already made a huge difference. The CXL leather will love you for giving it a bath. Now for the "body lotion". SnoSeal is pretty good, but it has petroleum in it that some folks claim is not good for the leather. I don't really know if that is a problem. Obenauf's, Pecard or Kennetrek would be my choices, all of which are very similar to one another in composition.

Uni -- Great looking boots. I have seen the distressed leather and really like it. Your shoe size must be small compared to my size 12.5.

Andy -- The distressed leather is one of my favorites and looks very good. However, it is a much more casual leather than the horsehide. If you're going for the tougher leather, the distressed leather is tough to beat. If you want to wear the boots with slacks, tie and jacket, the horsehide is the better hide - by far! You can't go wrong with either.

Brian - I agree that it's great to see your boots cleaned up. I recommend Obenauf's from personal experience. It's worth ordering some.

andy - Can you tell us more about the distressed being a notch down in stength? What makes it different? Bakers told me "The strongest leather is going to be any of their cowhide leathers that they offer. Black smooth, brown smooth, distressed and red dog." So I thought they were all equal.

b-ewing - Thanks!

Okal - They are a 9FF (yes, I said FF)

Very Impressed with the clean up Brian, they've gone from smokers lungs to given up and looking good. I am a smoker unfortunately. Also a ground crunching build Univibe, that leather in the full boot looks great, going to be in my next stock order. Cha's.

Uni,

Awesome Boot!

Your order date and delivery date make me excited; i ordered my classic work boot on May 20th.

I'm hoping my delivery time frame follows yours.

That I couldn't tell you. When I talked to both Kyle at Baker's, and the techs at White's, they all said the smooth black and brown offered as standard leathers on the boots such as the SJs were the thickest and most durable. I asked what the lightest color brown leather was that was still one of the most durable, and both told me that the smooth distressed brown would be the next in line for durability.

I have never seen the smooth distressed brown in person, but my Packers are the standard smooth black leather, and my SJs are the standard black (only reversed for roughout) and smooth brown. All seem like exceptionally strong and supple leathers. In your photos (which are the best I've seen yet of a pair of boots in distressed brown), the leather looks the same as the smooth brown and black, so I would think they should be just as durable. I hope you didn't take my comment to mean that they were not durable. I think any cowhide from White's is going to be so many steps above most other boots that you will never wear them out if you take care of them.

As an aside, my BHs have the smooth red dog vamp and heel, and I don't think it is as thick as the smooth brown or black.

Andy - thanks for the response. Not to worry, I wasn't taken back by your comment at all. I was just genuinely curious smile.gif. Thanks for your kind words about the photos. This thread was a huge help to me when deciding on these boots. I enjoy sharing pictures and participating in the discussion and sharing of knowledge in hopes that it helps someone else.

I have seen the smooth black and brown and the distressed leather all at the same time. If the distressed leather is any less durable, it is not by much. I wouldn't worry about the durability of the distressed leather at all, and it is exceptionally good looking for what it is designed to be -- a casual, lighter-colored, rough and tough type of leather. It doesn't hold a candle to the beauty of my horsehide boots, but not many leathers do. I can definitely say that if I wanted a pair of SDs, Farmer-Ranchers, or Packers for hard use and desired a nice patina with lots of coloration and use stains, I would heavily lean towards the distressed leather. And i love Uni's SJs in distressed (9FF!?! No wonder they look as wide as they are long! Hahahaha!!). As a matter of fact, a pair of one of those boots in distressed leather sounds really good to me!

I’m looking for leather care products to stock up on while I wait for my navy Chrome Excel boots to arrive.

Anyone hear heard about”Lexol NF Neatsfoot Leather Dressing It says: “Lexol NF is specially designed for today's vegetable and chrome tanned leathers” It also says it’s "non-darkening"...

Is it any good? Would Obenaufs be better? If so which Obenaufs leather product should I get?

Thanks guys

Allan,

That was EXACTLY my reason for talking to Baker's and White's about a lighter color leather. The black and smooth brown are so dark that they don't really develop a patina of any sort. Your reasons for liking the distressed are exactly why I know I will end up with a pair in that leather sooner than later. The only question is will I end up with a pair in HH before the distressed. biggrin.gif

Well, I was quite surprised when i got home from work last night! I was anticipating having to wait at least 2 more weeks; based on others order/lead times. But, here they are. I was fairly worried about "how much" toe kick there would be and others posting on this site about clown shoes. I am very satisfied with the look and the comfort of the "rock when you walk" to these boots. I made the right decision (for me).

461 last "classic work boot"

all oil tanned brown leather

brown edge

antique eyes and hooks

single mid-sole

100 vibram lug sole

double celastic toe

standard toe cap

standard curve heel -1/4"

8" w/pull loop

kilty/tongue guard installed

I have included some photos of my 15+ yr old cowboy packers in the same leather for comparison.
