Custom White's Boots ... Thoughts? - Page 88

Sorry,

I am a forum rookie. I was reading a thread from "Thor" regarding White's classic work boot.

Thanks,

Does anyone have an opinion/preference on the lower profile vibram soles, 269 vs. 430 vs. 700? Is one more comfortable? Are they all the same thickness? Does one have better traction?

Also, the build-a-boot site was a bit confusing with respect to the half slip. I think a half slip means that the vibram sole runs through the entire boot, from the toe all the way through to the back of the heel, but this seems counterintuitive as I would think this would be called a full slip? Does this boot (not mine) have a half slip? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to having the vibram sole run through the heel?

A half slip is basically a half midsole that runs from the heel through the middle of the boot. Here is a picture of a boot that has a half slip.

It's easier to see on their shoes, here is a pic of a pair of the oxfords without a midsole and only a half slip.

I think it gives a little more lift to the heel and is especially used with wedge soles that don't have has much lift as the usual White's arch ease

My understanding is that the half slip is simply an aesthetic choice in that it exposes a bit of leather on the sole.

Here are my boots w/ the half slip for reference:

Don't know if these are all the specs, but off the top of my head:

upper: British Tan
toe: distressed rough-out
antique eyes and hooks
standard last and standard trim

forget the name of the particular vibram sole.

It is indeed.

what you have (and I have on mine) is the vibram half composition sole (or comp. half sole) using the Vibram 700.  The half slip is what is pictured above a few posts back.  Its essentially a wedge that runs from the heel to the arch.  I dont know its purpose however.
