Dont forget to visit Sala Bagdad ( where Nacho Vidal , the porn actor started )

And Moog club, for electronic music.

Beware of Las Ramblas and the trannies, black prostitutes and your wallet.

you're right. i shouldnt have used dangerous. that was not the right word.

my friends had to fight off pickpockets like once a week and one girl had her brand new purse slashed with a knife. not violent, just annoying

one night while I was there with my friend who lives there I wanted to check out the scene at the ramblas.

First, i saw two guys hassling an ugly prostitute on the street. I took a picture like a boss and she flipped out and spit on me. Lol.

next we moved to the statue areas down a ways near the water, bought some estella damm from the paki's and downed a sixer. Everyone was pissing on the street, so we did the same. The second my buddy whipped his dick out, the 5-0 came rolling up. $100 euro fine. I guess if your a white dude who looks like he'll pay they'll nab you, if your a poor prostitute, then they look the other way.

So after that were buzzed and if you face the face the water we went 1 street parallel on the left. Rough area. These agressive african chicks were all over us. I literally had to shove them aside. My buddy put his wallet in his from coat pocket and zipped it up. They were grabbing his wang and shit - obviously tryi8ng to cause a distraction - after about 30 seconds of getting a cheap feel I pushed them aside and we went on our way. He found out that his OTHER pocket had been unzipped - didnt even feel it. Luckily didnt lose anything.

But its good times, maaan.

Wow. I've been 3 times in the last year, once with my wife, once with a stag group, once in a huge family group. No hassle, no pickpockets, nothing but sunshine, good food, good wine, and art. People all seemed really friendly. Keep your nose clean and your wallet safe, and you should have a great time.

We who love Barcelona and all other large & interesting cities should heed the warnings in this thread. My elderly parents and I are planning three separate trips to Barcelona this year, and I hope to visit many of the places listed below: Caixa Forum by Herzog & deMeuron; the recently consecrated Sagrada Familia; Parque Guell; Casas Mila & Battlo; Mies van der Rohe's Pavilion; the Gothic church Santa Maria del Mar; and the Picasso Museum. My parents know of a small hotel @ Placa Sant Agusti (yes, in the El Raval neighborhood), and I hope we will not add to the accounts in these very helpful articles.

I mean, we were walking down Las Ramblas, the street with all the trees, kiosks and that ends at the harbor, and I wanted to see the Liceo Theater... we took a street on the right, just after two minutes walking down the street, and ended up in a square filled with pushers, prostitutes and thieves...

The same thing happens with the market, very near the main square (the one with the Hard Rock café), during the day is an OK place, but after dark, you can see drug addicts getting their fix, and prostitutes "working".

I just wonder if this is what happens in many other big cities, I´ve been to Paris, London, Rome, Stockholm (well, a few cities) and I didn´t see anything like that, but I may have been lucky.
ya, I inadvertently wandered into the same area...it was pretty dirty. Fat African hookers and the men who love them. I didn't feel safe or threatened in any way there, I just kept walking and the neighborhood ended as promptly as it started (with a large park down the middle of a boulevard if I remember correctly - and quite possible that I dont - as I said in my first post, I spent most of my time there wandering around lost, and loved every minute of it).

But yup, as other people said, aside from witnessing some petty crap, it certainly wasn't a city I felt unsafe in.

One other observation, I found it a really hard city to eat in. I was travelling solo, and since basically everywhere wants to sell you tapas (which is really hard to do solo) I found myself a little more random-sandwich and fast food dependant than I would have liked.
