short version - some combination of hizballah, syria and iran killed lebanon's prime minister a few years ago. UN is investigating, and the results of the investigation will make the 3 look bad. hizballah has pulled out of the government of lebanon, which will make the government fall, and is making noises like it can cause civil war. what they want is to preemt the publication of the report, and I guess if they don't get it they will start something.

interesting part of the world. I wouldn't wish them as nieghbors on anybody, ect. maybe iran.

So will the Jews join in on a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" theory?

no evidence - that's why I said some combination. for years the assumption was it was Syria. now, the gossip is that it will prove to be hizballah. hizballah can't/won't do anything without help from iran.

Is this the same as Maronite Catholics?

I sold some homes to Lebanese Maronite families a few years ago and they were wonderful to deal with. They were professional people, mostly engineers, and were very assimilated.

But they seemed to be in agreement that Lebanon was not a good place for Maronite people, then and now. Although they all missed their home country, I had the feeling that they were leaving it entirely.

As a boy, I remember many Lebanese Jews that had emigrated to NYC. I bet there are not too many native Jews left in Lebanon and I bet their numbers are declining.

I think the Lebanese constitution at one time had clear delineations for Maronites and Muslims to hold certain positions. I wonder if this is still observed. GT or Shah, do you know?

yes, each position in the government needs to be a specific community.
