I am posting this on behalf of my brother who asked for my help in buying a messenger bag. Hopefully a few people will have some recommendations that fit his budget. He is looking for a messenger bag in the $50 range but he is willing to pay more depending on the bag (I guess his real limit is about $100-$150 but he said $300 is too expensive for sure). I know this is a low budget so this is why I am hoping some SF members will have ideas in that price range as I don't.
He doesn't mind if the bag gets busted up after a year or two of use. He is mainly going to put a pair of shoes and a lunch box in the bag. He really wants a heavy twill (cotton) bag but is willing to consider any other relatively nice looking bag in his price range. Since we both don't know what kind of messenger bag can be gotten in this price range, feel free to to bring us down to earth and make reasonable recommendations if $50-$100 really doesn't get you anything.
