Pittsburgh: I recently spent some time there and was pleasantly surprised. Then again, my expectations were pretty low. I expected a rust belt wasteland, akin to Buffalo or Cleveland. Pittsburgh turns out to be a charming, completely unpretentious city with decent food, and and music. It's the sort of place that I can live in at 35, but would have hated at 25.

Portland, ME: There's a definite Austin, TX vibe there.

I actually like the city of Cleveland.

Some other picks would be Nashville, TN. Columbus, OH. Philadelphia. Boulder, CO.

+1

Not sure what intent would have to say about it since he lives there but both my wife and I loved Portland when we went. And with Boston a few hours away you don't feel like you're too far out of the loop. I'd probably consider moving to Portland if there were any jobs available.

The $300 homes available for one. You could go straight up slum-lord for like $10,000.

Any Northeastern or Midwestern city that isn't New York. Particularly, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

Or maybe it's just the good connections I have in each. I especially love dining at the St. Louis Club ... (hint, hint, J-boy ... if you are reading this).

Hard to find one "underrated" in the truest sense of the word, but I think Indy is definetly overlooked often. Austin, TX is probably the only other city I would choose.
