Check out Steve Huff's site. He made the switch to Leicas for the same reason you outline and posts a lot of Leica reviews.

If you want good lenses for your Canon or Nikon, you can always get the Zeiss lenses. No autofocus, but really beautiful picture quality.

The Leica mystique is as much about how you can work as the wonders of the lens/sensor.

Unlike manual gearboxes or handsewing, there are actually objective advantages to the Zeiss lenses and manual focus.
