Interesting thread, particularly comments from Foodguy and Pio. Heartily agree about Pinot (and wines in general) as you move North into Oregon and even the work going on around Walla Walla.

Cab. Sauv. is by no means a favorite of mine but there are California examples I like. Jordan & Shafer come to mind.

I'm biased as my preferences lie in the deeper end of the pool: big Italians; however, I generally dislike the steroetypical California fruit bomb approach to most varietals. And hate the over-aoked nature of many Cali wines... especially what they try to do to barbera.

The wines I know the least are French, across the board (no surprise that I prefer Rhones of what I have had). I've been trying Burg's on friends recommendations, but have yet to find one I like remotely close to my like for JK Carriere, for example.

For the record, I have been reminded that Bord. blends completely lacking any Cab do exist.

I think the best wine I ever drank was a '76 Napa cab from the cellar of a close friend's father. It was the last bottle of a case they'd bought many years before and it was spectacular. I wish I remembered the name.

not disagreeing, but you need to look beyond this. nobody forces wine buyers to follow parker scores. they do it because he's a useful predictor of what they'll like (and also because if they make a pour a bad wine -- or one they don't like -- they have the socially useful fallback of saying "that's a Parker 95").
When folks in the business talk about "Parkerizing" a wine, what they're really talking about is making wine that will appeal to the great mass of wine buyers, who, in my experience, adopt wine drinking as a social signifier, get really into it for 4-5 years, then move on to another signifier.

Do you include Cab Franc in that statement too or just Cab Sauv?

I seem to recall trying something bordeaux that was Merlot, Petit Verdot and Carmenere...

I would not include Cab Franc, but even if you did, you could feasibly get a blend of only Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec (being the other grape you were reaching for).

I think it was Carmenere... technically a bord can be any combo of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carménère. right?

I think it was originally planted in Bord, particularly in the Medoc, but got wiped out. It could well be allowed but not sure if you'll find it? Heh, let me summarize: I'm not sure!

I don't know of any blends that don't at least include cab franc. I'll look. The St. Emilion wines are primarily merlot/cab franc only.

I drink far more white than red, and cabs are probably my least favorite, but I can't say I dislike them.
