The new official TOJ thread, 2011 - Page 2014

Picked up MA-1 from post office.
It's amazing.
Handling it is like a down comforter, wearing it is like putting on nothing with ribbing at the sleeves.
Side arm pocket is so good. Napoleon pocket fits Galaxy S3 nicely, though its cutting it a little close, definitely made for an iphone. Extra pockets inside are a nice touch.
The way the wool stacks and ruffles is perfect. Micro herringbone pushes the whole piece to another level. Pictures are one thing but you really need to handle this to get an idea of how awesome it is.

All the little design choices add to each other and come together to make this jacket elegant/subtle/cool/clean/comfy/badass simultaneously icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif
Good work TOJ crew

You can probably fit the Note in one of the two interior pockets.

Hey guys, been thinking about this long and hard and decided one of these'll be my next big purchase.  Need some help narrowing down which one to choose, though, was hoping you guys could help me out.

Some considerations:

  • I don't own any other leather jackets.
  • I have a few black jackets already, namely a waxed cotton Belstaff Roadmaster and a peacoat.  Not sure if I need another, am leaning toward the brown or some sort of whiskey now.
  • My chief consideration is versatility (and durability to the extent that I don't have to baby it).  I'd like to wear this as often as possible, so no particularly unusual color or setup, etc.
  • I have an athletic frame.  6'1", 45" chest and 33" at the waistband of my jeans.  That said, if the jacket extends past the waist (which is more than fine) it'd shoot out again due to thighs.  This doesn't matter so much since most TOJ's seem to have the ribbing.

What jacket would I look good in and be able to wear often?

So far, I'm looking at the TOJ Moto 2011 or CWU-45P, although I really can't rule out the MDR either haha...

So the current picks would be:

  • Calf TOJ Moto 2011 in some shade of brown (I'm thinking calf so far due to taking wear better than the lamb.  Any thoughts?)
  • Brown goat CWU-45P
  • Brown goat MDR with silver YKK zips

Open to any and all suggestions.  Figured I ought to jot my thoughts out here, but nothing's set in stone in the slightest, this is just what I'm thinking currently.  What'd look good and versatile?

IMO the brown leathers look the best on the A2. The jackets you listed I think look better in black.

Man I've finally got some decent-paying work lined up for this summer, gonna probably order 2-3 JC jackets by the end of summer icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Have the daypack orders been sent in?

Gotcha.  I think you're right, especially for the goat CWU-45...  the brown goat's just a little too dark.  I think it still might be an awesome option for the MDR, but for a flight jacket I'd want a lighter brown.

Is there a chance that non "off-black" goat options might be available in the near future, or should I not bother holding out for that?

Can't speak on its versatility, ask the users who have it -- but if you're thinking Moto and want a non-black color -- WHISKEY. The whiskey motos look amazing. I don't have the balls to do that, but if you can...do it.

Yeah for sure, interior pockets are roomy.

Random: why is the TOJ logo in the pocket and not on the collar?

Dude you've got me looking at some good stuff.

The four-zip moto's the one option where I love the thought of brown goat.  It just seems like it'd work and the subtle off-black'd really add some good depth to the jacket, and if it ages well...  Christ.

But if I don't go brown goat, the whiskey looks so, so good.  I'm just the only two whiskey options right now appear to be the lamb and the heavy calf suede,  which I'm leaning against due to durability (although the lamb'd look beautiful) and ability to handle a little rain, respectively.  If there was a whiskey option in regular calf I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't write off lamb just b/c of durability.  This is likely unlike the type of lamb you might have handled before

Would the lamb hold up to frequent outside wear in NYC?  Some rain, a little snow, and some unpredictable situation here and there?

Ahh, yeah -- I forgot all those nice pics of the whiskey were with a calf they don't have anymore.

As Dbear said, I wouldn't write off the whiskey lamb. But also that dark brown goat looks fantastic too. Can't go wrong.

You guys are making the lamb sound like some fragile leather that will fall apart at anything.

I've worn lamb in every season except for summer in NYC and its fine. Having a bit of rain or snow on it doesn't affect it at all
