I've done two of those buttons on my own. You can re-sew them by running the thread through the same holes, or you can take it to a cobbler/tailor. It's the same as doing a shirt button, but make sure you shank. And use a thimble.

Yeah, I'd use a thicker thread, too. I don't remember what it's called - maybe just embroidery thread or something. It took me a little while, because the leather is thick and I was being careful, but it's definitely doable even if it's annoying.
