Lapel Pins, Yay or nay?

The Army always includes a lapel pin whenever they are handing out an award/medal. Also, in Afghanistan they want you to wear a crossed US/Afghan flag lapel pin with your uniform. Needless to say, I lost that ASAP!

I've got quite a few, but I never wear one.

In my opinion, they do not look like they belong with a nice jacket or suit (or uniform, for that matter), certainly not like a beautiful pocket square, etc...

I have no problem with them as long as they're discrete, best if you wear them sparingly, though. I have one that I used to wear some that was from a university fellowship I had.

The flag lapel pins got old a long time ago.

Pins makes you look like some craven politician or a fussy geezer wanting to boast about some accomplishment or some membership that had meaning for him and him alone.

Aren't we styleforum-ers waaaaay too cool for lapel pins?

I do not use my chest/lapel as an advertising board, whether for my own affiliations or accomplishments, or for someone's else's product or ideology.

My chest is reserved for the projection of character and style of dress. If someone wants or needs to know anything more they'll have to approach and ask -- which results in a more meaningful and lasting impression.

At my company, wearing a "service pin" is a big deal and seperates those that run the show from the "newbies" Fortunately, it's small, and cool looking. Aside from that situation, I don't wear one.

That's certainly one way to commemorate, and I appreciate the genuiness of it; its just not my way.

With whom, may I ask, are you sharing that commemoration?

Is it a case where:

a. just by wearing it you feel connected to the person (and in that sense its sort of an outward representation of a private feeling), or

b. you wear it hoping others will inquire about it, giving you the opportunity to recount the person's goodness to you, and in that respect, you get to re-live it?

(Not that it matters one way or the other since yours is entirely an emotional bond and there really aren't any sartorial guidelines to govern those -- except perhaps in the "pocket square at a funeral" thread.)

I wear one when I travel abroad, but especially on the return journey. It helps my passage through the pasport control, as it is the emblem of the organisation that performs the passport controls. And since I too work for that organisation, why not...

Nay they look absolutely dreadful.

The post 9/11 custom of Americans in this respect plumbed the depths even more.

I reckon lapel pins are pretty big in the states right now. I run a instagram page for and post a variety of lapel pins. They can range from formal to casual as well. Generally I would say a floral lapel pins would be popular at weddings and dinner parties. Where as a gold plated or rhodium lapel pin would be a great accent for a work suits and help you stand out from everyone who wears a suit to work.
