Hope the new styling (& marketing?) will keep HF parent Hartmarx from another brush with Chapter 11.

My opinion is that any OTR suit is crap! With access to dirt-cheap tailors in Asia, not to mention the quality (but pricey) tailoring available here in the States, you can get a made-to-measure suit for less than or equal to OTR that will be far superior to any mass-produced OTR product.

When people buy OTR they do so because they a) care more about the label than anything else or b) want to justify their previous behavior by continuing to do what they've always done.

Hickey Freeman, Canali, Armani, Brioni, or ravioli are just labels produced for the masses who value goods by price and not worth.

The cost of flying to Asia would negate the cost of savings. There are online options, people who measure here then get the product outsourced and sent back here, But there's risk in that too. The chance of paying a small little shop money for a suit in 6 weeks, then the shop closing up and disappearing is much higher than finding that HF has gone bankrupt. If someone wears an OTR suit perfectly with minor alterations, then it is cheaper for them to go OTR than MTM.

When they mass produce OTR suits, they get economies of scale. It's simple they know how many suits they are going to make, they therefore know the amount of materials, and can negotiate and get the best price for fabric, because they are buying alot. Larger firms have more negotiating power, based on reputation and buying power and fabric mills know that.

Besides OTR suits often go on sale for 50%+, I mean just read a few posts in this thread, fully canvassed suits for $600 for example. Where are you going to find a reputable MTM for that price, construction and fabric?

For an educated person they may find viable MTM options out there, that they are pleased with, but for a lot of people they end up getting ripped off by "custom suits" and end up better with a reputable company OTR or the makers MTM. I've seen plenty of people who go to Asia then come back with boatloads of cheap custom make clothing, they think they struck gold, but when you look at the quality it's terrible. Fused suits, the stitching isn't even straight, terrible all around.

Minor detail, but I think their new logo / label is really cool. It's a minor detail, but this is what makes great companies stand out from the rest.

I've always liked HF but their suits can be a tough fit for me. They work well for many others, though.

How much did those suits run ya?

One overlooked aspect of HF is that they make intermittent sizes.

I know of no other OTR suitmaker, except perhaps Oxxford, that makes a 43R/L.

I guess they are not a maker, but BB has (had?) these (at least in 43L).

Is Hickey the same as Hickey Freeman, or is it a different line? There are some Hickey suits on Gilt for $499 and they look like a pretty good fit. The measurements say they have a 16" leg opening which is definitely not an old man fit.

Hickey was HF's attempt to reach a younger market. It wasn't as successful as they had hoped and has since shut down. Half-canvassed suits, modern fits (though with kind of padded shoulders). Probably good at $350 or less. EDIT: I own one and it's good.

Gilt also has HF on there at least 4 times a year, they always look like the Vanguard line as they are flat front and trimmer looking. They usually go for $300-$400ish on there and they are not the LTD line, which is the outlet brand (even still not a bad suit for $300 compared to what you see at retail "sales").

I purchased a Hickey Freeman suit from Gilt during their most recent sale. It is definitely Limited -- says so on the tags - and cost ~600. So, be careful.

All I have from HF is a side vented madison sport coat. Best fitting jacket I own, looks great. Well made sharp looking garment

Believe that the Ltd line is half canvassed.

I really love Hickey Freeman suits, but single vent is deal breaker.
