I personally prefer a box-calf to Cordovan. For me, Cordovan only looks good with jeans, or casual pants. They aren't formal IMHO. I spotted a guy wearing Alden Bluchers in cigar shell... they looked fantastic and matched his casual ensemble nicely.
There is an element of truth here. Cordovan can be 'too shiny and plasticy,' and almost look like a patent leather shoe. For a lot of men who appreciate the subtlety and nuisances of men's clothing, cordovan can come off as too dressy/flashy when worn with a business suit or worn in a causal business environment.
