NYC eyes ban on restaurant trans fats

NEW YORK (AP) -- Three years after the city banned smoking in restaurants, health officials are talking about prohibiting something they say is almost as bad: artificial trans fatty acids.

The city health department unveiled a proposal Tuesday that would bar cooks at any of the city's 24,600 food service establishments from using ingredients that contain the artery-clogging substance, commonly listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil.

does anyone remember the movie Demolishion Man with Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes? They banned all restaurants except for taco bell b/c it was the only thing that was healthy... It's been a while since i've seen it but they weren't even allowed salt.

This is awesome. I will be able to eat out and enjoy a meal without worrying about eating utter crap. You know people, it is possible to make good-tasting food with out bad fats.

Does that just mean that they would have to use lard instead of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil? Of course, I am assuming that small amounts of naturally occurring trans-fat are ok. Otherwise, there will be no more steakhouses in NYC.

Yeah, what about those of us who want to eat trans fats? Huh? You ever think of that? What's next, are we going to ban asbestos so people can't breathe it anymore? It's my freedom to get cancer if I want. I'd say it's my right, but what I mean is, you must hate my freedom.

The depiction of the future in that film was quite quirky and humorous, not at all what one would expect from a Hollywood film.

I'll take a ban on trans fats over a ban on foie gras any day.
