You are right about the guys with Chanel and watches.

But knock offs are very much treated as a big deal in France by the Government ( as experienced travelers can attest ).

If you have a bunch of knock offs and they are discovered when you are entering or leaving Paris, it is a big deal indeed ( as my poster buying friend warned me ).

It seemed the exact opposite of Hong Kong. When I was there it seemed that knock offs were very openly sold and were just another HK industry. There's a district, just outside of HK ( someone will know it ), that is like a knock off capital.

Also, Spoo has shown above that with knowledge you can get some great stuff at the Paris Flea Market for what I assume were good prices for him and better than he might have done in the US. That is what my collectible poster buying friend does at the Flea Market. He spends a lot on nicer stuff in that niche and has always been able to resell it higher in the US.

^ Thanks - yes, there is no way possible I could have picked any of that up really in the states, at any price really. They were purchased over the course of a few different trips, but IIRC : chromolithograph - 50 euro brass articulated sconce - 125 euro medusa ormolus (on bed) - 150 euro for the pair mask ormolu (above door) - 10 euro medusa brass curtain tiebacks - 75 euro

There's an amazing antique kitchen and dining supply shop there. Also, as far as shipping of large items, if you find something large that you just can not pass up, there are several shipping services within the market that will package it and then ship it over for you. Such a price would be worth it if you find a a dining table from the 15th century.

Can be insanely expensive. Bought some italian deco furniture from a proprietor in Rome and it was very costly to get it back. It was held in customs because they were afraid of parasites in the wood.

Parasites in the wood? Seriously? If there were any Italian-speaking parasites in that furniture I would think they would have been promptly eaten by good-ol American termites.

Another time I had a problem because I bought a large box that had been made with tortoiseshell... huge issue because I didn't have a certificate demonstrating that it had been made before some big treaty. Same problem with ivory.

US customs can tell the diff. between plastic and tortoise shell, I am impressed.

Anyway, care to post your finds here? I can use some eye-candy.
