Hair care & styling (Products and technique)

I've been spiking my hair for years now (I'm a young guy and think I can pull it off) but I have to use a wax stick and wet look gel to get it spiked without the waxy look. My hair is extremely thick with a slight curl in it.

In the morning I usually splash water on my hair then towel dry it - and immediatly apply the wax. Now I think that this doesn't help with the thickness, styling or finish of my hair. I've heard it's best to wash your hair (With shampoo) before styling then use a hair drier - but I like to wash my hair in the evening to remove any product before going to bed. Is there any other product I can use in the morning that won't strip the oil from my hair and make it dry?

Also I want to grow my hair slightly - If i was to straighten my hair before spiking would it stay straight?

Basicly to anyone who has a similar style with thick hair what do you do to style your hair (Product list etc.)

Thanks.
