Thanks Dreamer, yes I also saw the movie back in the 90s... and fell in love. We call her Gong Li bu it is the same one. Amazing actress and woman. Book is quite different but also wonderful, just a lot more terrible. Highly recommended.

My wife and I both picked up on that. White is our only Nobel Prize writer. Also no Peter Carey (dual Booker Prize-winner), no Thea Astley (five times Miles Franklin winner), no Christina Stead, no Manning Clark (one of our greatest historians), no Germaine Greer and none of the earlier Australian great novels, such as Fortunes of Richard Mahoney, Robbery Under Arms, etc. I guess that's what happens when you pick these lists via audience polling.

How was that list created? Seems strange to also leave out Pater Carey. I have seen a list of 100 best Swedish books and remember it was those books that find a very wide audience and carry a flavour of pungent Swedishness that ended up in the top ten. Those that would possibly be considered Nobel Prize worthy were "also rans" down at place 30 or 50 of 100. That particular Swedish list came from some invitation to vote through libraries.

1001 books have 2 x Carey, 3 x P. White, 1 x Christina Stead. I am a virgin of Aussie literature; once failed to read Peter Carey, that's about it.

It was a poll conducted through the year by viewers of the ABC's book program. Even the panellists on the show thought a couple of the books did not belong there (e.g. Courtenay, Silvey). There was pretty solid consensus around the winner though.

Ok, guess I must put Cloudstreet on my 2013 must-reads then. Tim Winton did not yet make the 1001 list by the way.

An oversight on their part. Twice shortlisted for the Booker Prize, winner of 4 Miles Franklin awards, published in 18 languages. If you like books that bring home a great feeling of place, especially the beach culture, Tim is your man.

I just noticed that Mo Yan is likewise not among the 1001. In a later edition I am sure he will be there considering the Nobel Prize.

1001 Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die is another interesting book. But not without flaws. There is not one single Moody Blues album included! shog[1].gif

106. The White House Connection Jack Higgins 1999 There is a new hero in this series, also an ex-IRA assassin named Sean Dillon. He brcomes involved in a plot of revenge being carried out by a woman whose son has been tortured and murdered. Higgins has a thing for the IRA. Maybe he haas/had ties. A good book.

107. Never Let Me Go 2005 Kazuo Ishiguro A FANTASTIC book. One of the five best I've read since we started this thing. Focuses on a group of clone children in what amounts to a prep school. As they grow up they make "donations" of vital organs to the rest of humanity, thereby eradicating disease for the rest of the population.Plot is revealed slowly and artistically. Character development for protagonists also excellent. It's on the List- but who cares. READ IT

I didn't like Never Let Me Go all that much. Loved An Artist Of the Floating World. Haven't yet read Remains of the Day. Are you aiming at 120? Any special targets for 2013?

Finally one I liked that you didn't.

I dunno about 120...

Would be tough...

50 for 2013. Looking at an additional job, at least for first couple of months... Maybe 75...
