I think that making fun of someone in this fashion is not ipso facto proof of racism. Again, YMMV, but I don't think the logic is there.

I think this thread has all made us realize that certain people see things differently and have different hot button issues. For instance, I think refering to a Gaellic descendant as a WASP shows you really have no fucking clue about history. I don't think it makes you racist though, just uniformed.

Maybe the take away is that while something might seem all in good fun to you it might upset someone else?

I hate it when people toss the racism moniker around, too. In fact though I reject that "racist" is the worst accusation you can level at someone. I know people like to act as though it is, but "murderer" and "rapist" are still up closer to the top of the list for me. But that post consciously threw in several racial elements, the purposes of which were to demean and belittle. (The stalkerish element to it was also downright sinister.) The intent seemed crystal clear to me. That makes it racist, IMO. CE brethren will know that I rarely stand on gladhands' side of things, but here we're shoulder to shoulder. That was a creepy, and racist, post.

It did seem to have a lot of venom behind it.

Usually works like a charm though you have 24,000 of them and it can be a bit of work to sift thru

Even if you leave, you'll still be a valuable resource to me and I'm sure a lot of the n00bs and semi-n00bs worldwide.

Well, I will say that at that moment, where I mustered up my strength to voice an opinion on a forum, I was a bit pissed to be told to go away. However, I did lurk for a few months before, so I knew it was something to be a part of. I just didnt want to get banned I had contests to create.

As for Vox, I would have to disagree with you. Im pleased to have been indoctrinated by Herr Sartoria.

Another item from the list of Things That Probably Only Bother Me: Please stop threadjacking with private conversations that should be taken to PM. A few stray comments here and there are fine, but nobody wants to read pages and pages of inside jokes that have nothing to do with the thread topic. I find this practice more annoying than anything in DT because it's unavoidable.

It's not just you. And good point in that it's unavoidable, not solved by using the ignore function, etc.

Is this better or worse than people who quote 120 lines (preferably with 18 embedded 3M images), just to add one or two lines of their own at the bottom?

In TransMod I pointed out that any quoted images should have the img tag stripped out of them. I don't think anybody responded.

There's probably a vb mod for that, but I don't think j wants to start adding stuff, especially since they're working on moving to another system altogether.
It's not so much that quoting images is bad per se, just that you should make sure that the ratio of new stuff added and old stuff quoted stays above a reasonable level.

These are the kinds of things that are difficult to codify and the last thing you want to start to enforce as a mod. But self-policing by concerned citizens can work in these cases, e.g. "Dude, do you have to quote the whole thing?", "Why don't you take this conversation to PM?"
Something like this can also quickly suck the fun out of a forum, so I usually stay quiet and endure the carpal tunnel in my scrolling finger..

This is just my opinion (obv) so do with it what you will.

IMO, porn or soft porn on SF = bad.

Never making real content contributions and just being full of idiocy and/or snark = bad

Never making any contribution other than bro-hood, misogyny, etc. = bad

Trolling/socks = bad

However, part of the fun of SF is that it has a certain edginess to it. Mod'ing or peer pressuring the edge away also = bad.

What I'm saying is, let's maybe tone down certain things that have become prevalent, but let's not change the overall character to that of white bread (racist!).
