shoe mould

I moved to a new apartment recently and have a big problem in the master closet with shoe mould. It only affects my Alden cordovan norweigan split toes and another pair of Aldens, which are big heavy **** stomper calfskin shoes with a flex sole that I rarely use, as they are best for a winter. Both shoes get covered in green dust, and the sole gets green and black spots. I have tried Damp Rid, in fact I have hung 3 bags in there at once. And at the end of hte week I had 3 bags of water AND mouldy shoes.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Take the shoes out and let them air dry, even without trees.

I had a pair of AEs 15 years ago, that went moldy on the inside. If the shoe has mildew you can make up a weak bleach solution and wipe them down with a rag dampened with the solution, then wipe again with clear water and dry with a clean rag.

Google "treating mildew" and you will find a link from the University of Florida with the proper mixture.

What type of shoe-trees are you using. A good pair made of cedar should prevent mold and mildew.

Does the closet smell of mold, after the shoes have been removed?

If all else fails, buy a dehumidifier and place it near the closet. Mold and mildew must have moisture to thrive. If you cannot find the source of the moisture, then your only choice is to control the climate with a dehumidifier, or move.

I probably will have to go the dehumidifier route. I took the 2 pair of Aldens out and moved them to a guest room closet to see if they still get mouldy. I will find out. If that solves the problem I will just keep them there, if not I will get a dehumidifier.

I definitely feel you need a dehumidifier. I've only ever had one pair of shoes go mouldy; I'd been saving it for a special occasion....what a surprise when i opened the box.

as i posted before, a tub of thirsty hippos might probably do the trick. it worked on my mouldy problem.
