Wedding with Male Friend

Thread Starter
So I got invited to an old friend's wedding reception on new years day. It's in the middle of nowhere and I don't want to go alone or bring a girl (I envision alcohol fuelled hijinks and hopefully macking on the 20 year old bride's friends). Would it be weird if I brought a male friend as my plus one? I'm envisioning Wedding Crashers: Real World Edition.

Thankxs!

I say go for it... but it's still probably best to ask whoever you rsvp to

A wedding isn't the same as a football game, to which bringing a male friend is commonplace. I think people will assume you two are a couple. Just sayin'.

I don't think you need a wingman because the groom can introduce you to single female wedding guests.

Don't bring a male friend. It would be an inappropriate abuse of the courtesy they extended to you in sending you a +1 invite.

yes. it is a courtesy, not an obligation.

You can bring him as the +1, but you will be less likely to be viewed as Wedding Crashers and more like Brokeback Mountain.

go alone if you plan on picking up a girl.

Did this when I was about 21 or 22. The universal -- that is, not ONE exception to it -- assumption was that we were a couple.

Now I personally think taking a guy as your wedding date -- and that's what it is, a wedding date -- is tacky and, as previous posters have pointed out, an abuse of the +1 courtesy. There's nothing wrong with going solo. In fact, it might make you more pitiful and therefore attractive in a sad puppy-dog sort of way to the bridesmaids.

Don't do that. Go alone.

If it was just about people thinking you were gay I'd say go for it but it's not. It looks like, and kind of is, an abuse the wedding party's hospitality.

Right. When people find out you're not gay, they'll just think you're rude.

Everyone will think you are gay IMO.

Interesting way of coming out of the closet.
