Need help: Ties and Belts

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am new to this forum and new to professional business dress as well. I have two questions.

1. Are IKE Behar ties for 29.99 at Marshalls a good deal?

2. Is it worth spending a lot on a belt? I bought one at a discount store for 10-15 dollars and the shiny black part of the "leather" is worn through after only a couple of months. There is now a dull gray under the peeling black layer. Would this happen with a more expensive, higher quality belt? How much should I spend/ what kind of belt do you recommend?

Thanks for your help.

Retail on those is around $85. I wouldn't pay $30 (or any $) for one but if you really like the pattern, you could do worse. Depending where you are, you can get better quality ties for not much more $.

I guess you answered the first question yourself. That said, belts will wear out over time, just like shoes. 2 months is still too quick but if you did, then don't wear the same belt every day, like shoes again, give them a rest.

A higher quality belt will be better constructed and out of better materials and will last longer (though I have had a $250 Zegna suede belt come unglued after less than one season wear).

Retail on a good quality belt is $150- $300, more for expensive designer brands. Buy on sale and you can get a good one for $100. Allen-Edmonds are pretty good, so are Trafalgar. I have Zegna, Canali and Pal Zileri belts (all bought for < $100) that have held up quite well. I also have some Banana Republic casual belts that are nice too.

As a general rule, accessories can make or break an outfit - even a nice suit will look crappy with cheap accessories so don't cheap out.

1) $29.99 is still a bit more than I would pay for Ike Behar. If you wait til they go on clearance, the Ike Behar and Joseph Abboud ties that retail in stores for $80-$90 are a good deal at $15-20.

2) I'd look into Allen Edmonds belts which can be found on ebay for good prices. They are fairly standard belts that will work with many outfits, and are of the same level of quality as their shoes (in the belt world).
