The reception to it from the ballet world has been both hot and cool. After seeing this Charlie Rose interview with Portman and Aronofsky, I can't help but think they hold the ballet world with some contempt, and they have pretty warped views about it:

That's all the more surprising given how much cooperation they've received from the ballet world, and how much they've been exposed to it also. Natalie Portman is also dating a principal dancer at New York City Ballet, so one would think she would know better.

This review from a well-known and regarded critic seems on point:

That's a good Charlie rose interview. I looked it up on ballet talk but personally I didn't think of this as a dance movie. I saw this more as a psychosocial movie with the backdrop of ballet.

Have you seen the movie? What do you think?

I haven't seen it yet, but plan to despite what I said. I just wish he didn't feel the need to play up the popular stereotypes of ballet to make his movie.

Saw Black Swan last night. It was good as far as modern movies go. A few over the top parts, and parts that just show off effects. A lot of Aronofsky sexuality. I am sure a lot of people who have not seen really good movies will rave.

I am in awe of your discerning taste and undoubtedly large intellect.

I have heard there is no nudity in the lez-boat scenes. If this is true, I have no further interest in the film.
