Tartan Trews

Thread Starter
My latest project is to have a pair of trews made.

I have selected Ulster Red tartan, and I have been given a recommendation by a former forum member of a Scottish lady who will make them up for me.

My main intention is to substitute them for my dinner trousers for black tie affairs occasionally, but depending on the cut I may get more use of them.

Because of this dual purpose intention I am steering towards brace buttons and side adjusters, but not the most formal high waisters, with a fish back.

I was just wondering if any members have such a item, or have seen them worn?

Stick with your regular dinner trousers.

Jovan, I thought you were brave?

I have seen them worn, but only occasionally, and by a veteran of some regiment, the plaid of which he used for his pair. He was an odd guy, and I guess they worked for him, perhaps because he was quite odd, and could kill you if he felt like it. I'm not a fan, personally.

If you wear the tartan of your clan and clearly come from Scotland then please do, otherwise it is a silly affectation that will win you no friends sartorially. You may even be ridiculed generally.

Side adjusters AND braces?

I am an Ulsterman and as such see no problem with wearing trews. I have a number of tartans I can choose from but have selected my Provincial tartan.

They are intended mainly for events in which they would be appropriate, Burn's Night etc.

Yes. It gives the option of wearing the trousers when I do not think braces are appropriate.

Why the surprise, most of my trousers have both brace buttons and side adjusters? This is perfectly normal.

Brave to Get Smart's extent yes, but that's just plain silly IMO.
