He's not that majorly involved. He's a producer, yes. He writes one episode a year, yes. But D&D don't run everything by him. Often certain scenes and interpretations are a surprise to him.
As for knowing he can't write fast enough to keep up with the series, I think that's true. But based on all his interviews of late, Martin is still delusional and thinks things can be done to buy him more time (not likely IMO).
