Agreed, it also makes him more dependent on Coldhands for protection--some more Others show up, he doesn't have the dragonglass and so can't defend himself, and then Coldhands shows up to save the day.

Damn, I'm fired up to see Coldhands.

I'm wondering how they will handle his appearance. Given the hypotheses that he is Benjen Stark, I wonder if they will cover his face so we can't tell. If not, this could be a rare case of the show resolving questions from the books.

My point is its clear they showed him leaving it on purpose.

I imagine that is true... that still doesn't mean I have to like it. Damn the plot devices!

Always thought that Sam was poorly written in the books. How many times does he need to say, "I'm just a craven" before we get it. The TV character isn't much better.

Little disappointed they didn't force the actor to drop weight during the shoot. Maybe he found a crate of Dharma chocolate bars like Hurley did.

I saw a picture yesterday of the guy who plays Sam surrounded by the rest of the cast and felt bad for him. Here he was, surrounded by all these smokeshows--I think he had his arm around Natalie Dormer and Sophie Turner--and it was just so clear, one of these is not like the others.

Of course, he probably makes several multiples of what I do, and probably pulls more tail than I ever dreamed of, but all the same, I felt bad for him.

His character in the Borgia series was really a sad sack.

But don't we all have a little Sam in us?

The dragonglass doesn't work on wights/reanimated undead only Others/White Walkers. The wights attack Sam next and Coldhands and his ravens protect him.

Coldhands has been dead for a long, long time. He is not Benjen Stark. He is probably the Night's King who was a Black Brother brought down by his own brother the King in the Norht and the King Beyond the Wall. He was known to consort with Others- he had one for a wife.

That, or, he's just a thrall of Brynden Rivers aka BloodRaven, both in life and subsequently in undeath.

There should be plenty more fat and/or ugly characters. But, it being Hollywood and all. Jorah should not be handsome at all. Magister Illyrio should be immense, but he was merely overweight. I can't wait to see how they cast Lord Wyman Manderly. He should be too fat to sit a horse. And so should his son who may or may not show up next episode. And, I'm wondering what they will do with Fat Walda.

My point exactly. When everyone is gorgeous, it doesn't stand out so much--but when you put him next to all the gorgeous people, it really becomes quite obvious.

I agree he is not Benjen. Leaf, the Child of the Forrest, said the wights had killed him a long time ago, so we know he's ancient. I am wondering if there is any significance in his mount being an elk. I think Bloodraven is the "three eyed crow" so my bet is he's the Nights King.

Coldhands being Benjen is a pretty common theory. I'm not saying it's right, but it's certainly the most common theory I've seen. As for Brynden Rivers, if he's the three-eyed crow, which ADwD seems to heavily suggest, then he isn't likely also Coldhands.

And yes, the dragonglass doesn't work against the wights, but they've already changed things around a bit--my point is that they may try to use it to heighten the tension even more.

I didn't say he was Brynden Rivers. I said he was his thrall.

Piobaire covers where I get that he's very old.

And, regarding Brynden Rivers being the Three-Eyed Crow, that's definitive based upon his description in ADwD and the description of a living Rivers as Hand of the King in the Mystery Knight - albino with white hair, a single red eye after the other was lost in battle of the Blackfyre rebellion. Plus a red birthmark from his throat to his check that looked like a crow or raven - a Bloodraven. Brandon Stark describes the 3EC as white except for a bloody blotch on his neck and check, white hair, and one red eye. It's almost identical to Dunk's description, only he's deteriorated being 130 years old or so, and having a tree growing through his body.
