I understand why they want him. They need the king's blood and I guess they haven't built up the idea that he's got Edric Storm (and Gendry is a character that people already know) but wtf? The whole meeting in the woods seemed pretty contrived.
I don't buy that the lord of light led her there...we know that she is most likely misinterpreting most of the signs (stannis is clearly not the one) and I doubt that her god would have shown her how to go find Beric's crew. Gendry is supposed to save Brienne in the future...but I guess he really doesn't come into play other than that.
I wonder if this means that GRRM has no future plans for Gendry. If he is going to do anything in the upcoming books, then they might not have sent his character off with Melisande. Edric is sent off into hiding by Davos, so it is possible that Gendry gets sent back to the brotherhood, but I can't see him really wanting to return to them after they sold him off (unless it is staged as the brotherhood rescuing him).

I think they can still work this out to get him where he needs to be, although they seem to have abandoned Rorge and Biter- neither has promised to bugger her or her dead body. Melisandre brings him back to Dragonstone. Davos speaks to Stannis and gets him to be just. What is Stannis if not just. He cannot condemn his brother's son to death without having committed a crime punishable by death. The Onion Knight could remind him by showing him his shortened fingers. Stannis relents and lets Gendry go. Gendry has a winding road back but ends up at the Crossroads Inn with the orphans around the time Brienne gets there. It's protected by the Brotherhood, but by then the Brotherhood is a different beast and nobody remembers Gendry; they only accept him as a smith.
This scenario both gives Davos some good stuff as an honest man; lets Stannis be human; puts Gendry in the right place at the right time; and eventually turns Brienne over to Lady Stoneheart. Gendry has no real value any longer. Unless you are trying to prove that Ser Pounce's owner is not a true Baratheon. But, that ship has sailed, sides have been chose, and the victor will make the decision there.
