Cheapest meal you regularly prepare for yourself - Page 3

Hey guys a meal is (at least) 1000 calories, and you need 3 of them a day to stay alive. Half a can of black beans and half a cup of rice for a lunch won't cut it unless you enjoy starving. Lets see some real suggestions please.

+1. I can easily make it on about 1300 a day w/o being too hungry. Half a can of black beans and a cup or so of rice is plenty.

2 packs of ramen noodles (Nissin Chicken) for about $1.70, fills me up real good. Not very healthy I guess, but it's really delicious for me.

I saw a mention about more protein than rice and beans.

My serving of rice and beans for 30 to 35 cents has about 18 grams of protein.

A dozen eggs runs $1.50 and has 6 grams of protein per egg. Two eggs cost 25 cents and yield 12 grams of protein.

A can of tuna that costs 75 cents has 12 grams of protein.

So I guess if we really want to figure out how cheap food is, we need to break it down to cost per gram of protein, per kcal, etc.

Were you sitting next to me at a dinner party last evening? If you were, you will recall ... as you asked not only for my dessert ... but also the dessert of the person on your other side as well.

I kept thinking ... my my where is it all going? Then you rose from the table and I realized.

Can of sardines Saltines Cream cheese Dijon Mix the sardines up with cream cheese and dijon to make a nice little dip for your crackers. It's fairly filling and costs maybe $1.50-$2, it makes a good lunch as long as you eat something a little more balanced for breakfast/dinner. It really tastes quite good if you like fish and is quite healthy in comparison to a lot of other "quick and cheap" alternatives. I probably go through 2 cans of sardines a week, they're just so easy. I don't always have them with dip though, sometimes I just eat on crackers with hot sauce.

You're paying $1.70 for two packs? Christ. I can buy a six pack at the dollar store.

Can you elaborate a bit on your recipe for this one? I'm tired of pinto beans...trying to figure out how best (easiest) to use black beans.

Yeah, I dunno about other areas but here in Calgary, Alberta it's like that. Only brand I eat is Nissin (and most of the time Chicken version), and seems like only Asian markets carry them, and they aren't very cheap >.<

We are thinking of the same stuff, right? Those square packages of top ramen that are a staple of college diets? Boil it with 2 cups of water, dump the packet of flavored salt in and call it a meal?

You know, this stuff?
