Sweater Fit Advice

Alright guys, This is my first time posting on SF, but I am a long-time "lurker." Yesterday, I decided to take advantage of J. Crew's 25% of sweaters sale and pick up a cashmere navy v-neck sweater and olive toggle wool chunky cardigan. In the past, I have bought small sweaters in cotton cashmere and wool, and all of them have stretched out to be huge and gross. So this time I decided to splurge for the cashmere and size down to an XS (I usually wear a S in everything else). However, I can't decide if these are too fitted. Are sweaters supposed to be a little loose? Should I exchange these for an S? Here are some pics, let me know what you think. Please excuse the poor iphone picture quality.

First one is too short, second is too snug.

The cardigan is too short? How much does cashmere stretch?

Its hard to tell from the angle of your photo, but it seems like the cardigan barely falls below your waistline.

I'm not sure how much cashmere stretches, but the fit of that one is probably the best you can do, what with J Crew being J Crew and all.

Do you like the fit?

My problem with sweaters has always been that the smalls stretch out and are too wide. I am about 6"0 and only a 29ish waist, so finding stuff that fits is a bit of a challenge. I owned several cotton cashmere sweaters and a few wool cardigans from J.Crew but took them all to the resale shop because I was practically swiming in them after a few wears (and I didn't know how to take care of them and put them in the washer). I know that J.Crew is sometimes not the most loved brand around here, but in Houston there aren't too many moderatley priced places that are my style. I have recently started splurging on some Steven Alan Shirts, RRL and Left Field jeans, etc. However, I just can't afford to go out and drop $750 on one Gilded Age sweater.

I hear you man. I wish I could help, but you might have better luck in the j crew thread.

Go to club monaco and try on their cashmere sweaters & cardigan, could bet they'll will fit better than those, I use xs and their sweaters & cardigans are particularly long compared to others yet slim fitting.

Cardigan is a little short in the body, and it's hard to tell but it looks like the sleeves may be too short as well (hard to tell with them rolled up). The problem is that the shoulders look great, so i'm a little concerned sizing up may widen up the shoulders too much. The sweater is too tight, go with a small.

Club Monaco? I have always thought they were a bit Eurotrashy...

You're probably thinking of French Connection, but I've never actually seen a Club Monaco.

They have one in my local mall. I have never been in. I just figured that a store called "Club Monaco" was not the best place to suit my classic-American/rugged style. But perhaps I am wrong...

There's a Club Monaco thread where you can gape at what people are kopping. They have a lot of basics: plain tees, sweaters, peacoats, etc. From what I've seen, it's nothing too gaudy.

May I suggest saving your pennies and then splurging on an SNS Herning when a sale drops? Don't think you'll regret it.

Never heard of SNS Herning before. Just pulled them up and, in additon to the price, their styles seem a bit odd. The only cardigans I see button from the neck to the bottom. Is that just their thing? Maybe it is just the way it is pictured that seems gross to me. I do have a Wings & Horn hoodie on my Christmas list though...
