How to begin drinking scotch? - Page 4

Excellent thread. I've been interested in this and have only really been drinking it on the rocks, as room temp neat burns more than tastes like anything. Maybe I'm just being a pussy and being too impatient. Anyways, I'm definitely going to take some of this into account.

Anyone know of any sites or books that deals with this in detail?

I'm slowly starting to develop a taste for it. I'm 22 and my first ever scotch experience was a glass of Macallan 21 that a friend bought for me at a bar. That was followed by a Macallan 18 year. I recently had some Highland Park 18 at my father's house, which I enjoyed but not as much as the Macallan 21. So far I still prefer a good Cognac to scotch, but I'm trying! So far the key for me seems to be taking my time - putting some space between the first couple of "burn" sips and the rest of the glass seems to help me pick up on the flavors much better.

i started drinking scotch when i was 17. get a bottle of johnie walker red. start with ice. move to a little bit of water. it is going to suck at first but after a few glasses you will ge the hang of it

Btw, at this point you are probably confused to how different scotch makers can taste different (I didn't believe in the beginning). The best way to find out is get the tiny 50ml bottles and have a taste test. You can get glenlivet and macallan pretty easily, I think lagavulin 16 also come in those.

Another +1 to disliking Bourbon. I can't stand the stuff. Plus, it makes me feel depressed when I drink it, even if it's mixed. I once bought a bottle of Knob Creek on a whim and had to give it away because it was so disgusting. I know so many women that love it. It boggles my mind; perhaps in the same way vodka martinis do.

Anyone who is really serious about single malts should read this. Don't pay any attention to the context...it's a kilt forum, and don't pay any attention to the dialogue. Just know that the author is a real expert/aficionado and everything he says in the three essays here is spot on. Pay particular attention to his comments on ice. and his remarks about the differences in taste between the malts of different regions such as Island, Highland, Speyside, etc.. I began with Glenlivit and Glenfiddich. And I wasn't sure. I went from there to Talisker and Lagavulin and Laphroig. With side trips to Balvenie, Oban, Dalwhinnie,Caol Ila, etc. Somewhere along the line you discover your preferences. I'll still enjoy Talisker and Gelnmorangie. I really like the Macallan 18 for brunch. Laphroig Quarter Cask is my standby. But I am currently into the Ardbeg 1990 Airigh Nam Beist. In my opinion,among good malts the best malts are old malts. As P1M says anything younger than 12 years old is going to have a pretty stiff raw grain alcohol taste. Macallan 12 is much rawer and less smooth than the 18. Applies pretty much across the board. I've gone from the sweeter fruity Speysides with little or no peat, to the Island malts which are usually very smokey and peaty and finish quite dry, to Arbeg which is reputed to be the smokiest and peatiest of them all. I would note one other thing...I have had gastric reflux for almost 20 years due to a small hiatal hernia. I can't drink wine, for instance. But not only can I drink a good malt without ill effects, I seldom have a hangover when I've overdone it a bit. Read the link and good luck. Tioraidh

I haven't tried them all, but Lagavulin 16 is the smoothest hard alcohol I've ever had. I had 4 doubles of Lagavulin 16 last friday night and I woke up the next morning totally fine. I had 4 coronas at the Leaf's game last week and I woke up the next morning with a huge headache. Go figure. Gonna keep trying different brands, especially Islays, but I think Lagavulin 16 is gonna come out tops. I can't imagine a more perfect drink (that I can afford on a regular basis).

thats because Corona always seems to be skunky. Its the clear glass bottle that doesn't stop UV rays. If you love laga 16, def try the other Islays like Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Not as smooth as Laga 16 but def a good dram.
