Happy Hannukah!

While I am secular I was raised Jewish and still have a strong appreciation for the rich cultural and religious traditions. To those of you celebrating in whatever capacity have a great holiday! I know I will And if you've never participated in a Hannukah celebration I strongly recommend you find some Jewish friends or a Jewish community center to do it for a night. This holiday has an emphasis on fried food and gambling!

You have a seder for the first night of chankuah and it just goes for fucking ages (depending on how much stuff you want to read and act out) but on the bright side you get to eat matzah with charosset and horseradish, eat some hard-boiled eggs, whatever you're really hungry from waiting so goddamn long so it all tastes good. Around half-way through, you light the middle candle and then use it to light one of the candles (+1 each additional night) and eventually you get to eat a lot of bland food but it has its charms (matza ball soup, matza with charosset, macaroons, latkes). You get given a pencil or a piece of paper each night for your gift because your parents are cheap Jews and they're saving up for you to go to Harvard law and for your sister's sweet 16 nose-job, and 7 days later you have a second seder to finish off the holiday and the matza and grape juice and horrible wine go back in the cupboard until next year. There, you've just experienced my childhood I mean chanakuah.

Chanakuah isn't really even a big Jewish holiday. Pesach is the big one, also the one with the little hat cookies filled with jam. Whoever came up with that one was a fucking genius.

the common story of hannuka is that the temple was desecrated and when the jews went to fix up the temple they didn't have enough oil to keep the ceremonial lamps running for more than one night, and it took 8 days to get new oil, but the oil that should have lasted for one night lasted for eight. so, the celebrations revolve around oil - you eat oily foods like donuts and potato pancakes, and you light candles for eight nights. you also play a game using a top. so typically, you will get together with your family in the evening and light candles for eight nights. most families in america will also give presents anywhere from one to all eight nights. you might have potato pancakes or donuts on one or more of those nights. in my household we make the special candelabras (called hanukiot) one night out of clay, we play with tops one night, we give toys one night, one night we chose the charities that we will give money to this year, we go to friends one or two nights, and have friends over one night.
