Otherwise I'll stick around what I know and focus on getting shitfaced and staying warm.

And not losing your cash, keys and jacket.

I really depends on what you are looking for, but depending on where you go for the evening it can definitely be a great time, but I have had much better NYE celebrations in other places.

New Years in NYC is overrated. Don't be one of the dumbasses that are freezing in the cold like a pack of sardines in times square.

only idiots go to times square on NYE... better off having a party with friends and watch the ball drop on tv... why freeze your ass off outdoors in caged locations with no wine or liquor??

I plan to go to New York for a few nights, including the NYE. I'm not planning to attend any huge ass parties or go to Times Square, though. More like, the trip coincides with the New Year's celebration. I'm more interested in visiting some museums, maybe see a show on broadway, walk around NY. I found an Expedia Unpublished Rate hotel which is a 4-star hotel somewhere in the Central Park area for about $250 a night. The flight is $500 per person, so another thousand. How much am I looking to spend during 4 days in NY on entertainment? Do you think the hotel is a good deal?

Thanks!

Hotel is a very good deal..DEPENDING on the hotel. How much $$ to spend? Totaly depends on your style and what you plan to do. Does every meal need to be at a mid/high end restaurant? Are you the type that can grab a sandwich at Subway during the day for lunch? Totally depends...

Absolutely, I can have pie for lunch and take the train instead of a cab.

I'm planning on spending one day at the MET and then going for dinner and drinks. Maybe go to a jazz club or something like that. Any recommendations?

I also want to go see a broadway show on one of the nights. That's about all I have planned for now. Oh, and I remember eating in a kick-ass pizzeria that claims to be the first in the US, so I definitely wanna get there for lunch one day.

Any suggestions on what to do? I'll be there from the 30th to the 3rd. I'll have a girl with me. I'd like to stop at one of the discount stores everybody's getting such great deals at. What's the best way of integrating that into the trip without boring my companion to death?

Thanks!

By the way, I'm staying in this hotel:

Is it OK?

Yes, nice place. Across from Lincoln Center, more Upper West Side than Times Square. Ed's Chowder House, the in-house restaurant, is pretty good, although not really worth what they charge. Nice bar. Good subway access at 66th and Broadway. The Metropolitan Opera is performing La Traviatta and the Philharmonic should have a new years eve performance as well. Bar Boloud is close by and great for drinks and charcuterie. Grey's Papaya is five minutes away and worth hitting one day for lunch. Zabars is 15 minutes away by foot, good to check out if you're into food. Brunch one day at Barney Greengrass. If you have to go out on NYE, Cafe Luxenberg usually has a decent option. You can walk to most of the museums if you like, including the MoMA. Have a drink or a light dinner in the restaurant attached to the Museum, the Modern. Enjoy.

Thanks a lot! That's very helpful. But damn, they are playing La Traviata on the 31st and I'd love to go if there were tickets still available! I'm hoping I will find something on craigslist. Edit: Yey! Found tickets for La Traviata on the 31st. They are the worst tickets available and at a hefty price, but it's still better than not going. Thanks again juuceman, that was one solid piece of advice!
