Okay, since MS ruled out comp'ed dinner, had to go way back to just out of high school and in some of my undergrad years. Mow-mow soup. Complimentary packets of ketchup from McDs, or similar, with hot water.

Pizza place near me (kind of- they're one of those places that has a little of everything, pizza, pasta, burgers gyros, hot dogs et...) - 3.25 for burger (1/4 or 1/3 lb ?) fries and can of pop

a handful of places around the city have a huge slice of pizza (1 slice = meal) + can 'o pop= 2.50

otherwise, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned this - brunch places. Its not hard, even in big cities, to find brunch places where you can get something along the lines of two eggs + toast + potatoes for < $4

In NY... $2.50 for a box of rice, overflowing with roast pork and bok choy... In China, 3 rmb(at the time, 46 cents USD) for double order of hand pulled noodles in peanut/seasame sauce with an order of mini sized wontons.... Dinner for 10 @ a Dai Paai Dong 180 RMB ($21)... 1 litre bottle of coke, 6 .5L bottles of beer, a 4 kg fish cooked in a broth with a kilo of pea spouts, fresh tofu, dried bean curd sticks ... peppers, lotus root and beef noodle stir fry, and a plate snails... the most expensive item was the bottle of coke...

I have had more than a few meals from street vendors in Thailand for in the $0.75 to $1.50 range.

Lately, my cheapest meal when I go out to eat is lunch at a diner near my office with two chili dogs and a coke for $2.50.

Local Ikea in Calgary has breakfast for $1. Not a lot of selection, but I thought it was pretty good, and delicious at the price of a dollar.

80 baht is worth a negative dollar? I wouldn't mind getting paid a buck to eat some pad thai.

my school in indonesia used to have food carts that stood outside the back gate. the school largely overlooked their presence since they didn't want to monitor them for food safety etc but also didn't want them to go away as so many students depended on them. \t 'mie ayam' or chicken noodles for idr 2500.. which at the time due to the currency fluctuations came to less than 30cents. a dollar at the time used to serve for lunch + drink plus after school snack of 'bubble' tea... the tapioca balls served more as ammo to shoot at girls than food anyway...
