What Movies Are You Watching Lately - Page 608

^^^^^

I'm going to go check that out very soon. I grew up on Godzilla movies. For whatever reason, my Chinese father loved watching Godzilla destroy Japanese cities.

And not so much a movie, but I've been steadily going through True Detective this week. Matthew McConaughey has come quite far since his RomCom days.

Just watched Wolf of Wallstreet last night. A lot of fun. Very surprised not to be bored for a minute during the 3 hours plus I sat through it.

Godzilla 8/10

A very fine second film from Gareth Edwards.

Good acting, especially from the wonderful Brian Cranston, and a very good script with nice layering and timely subsets. The movie maintains a good pace and the monsters arrive at just the right moments.

There is some brilliant CGI that blends beautifully with the photography. The 3D is subtle, and the movie will look just as good on a regular screen. There are a couple of scenes that are very creative and look stunning.

The only stumble is a hilariously miscast Sally Hawkins. She's a typical Hollywood flavour of the month (Blue Jasmine) and looks like a lost soul amongst the mayhem.

A good, effective score by the ever present Alexandre Desplat. He makes a lot out of a little.

The movie hits on all the right points and is happily unpredictable. Recommended.

Jack-Ryan-Shadow-Recruit.jpg

Fairly entertaining if a bit generic. Shame that this reboot sees Ryan forced into the Ethan Hunt/Jason Bourne action mold, compared to the more interesting, action averse Ryan from Clancy's novels and the previous movies. Costner was a nice addition, though.

Finally watched Hobbit Desolation of Smaug.
Not really dissapoint because I expected it to be crap. CGI overload, a lot of artificially looking locations and characters(esp Legolas looked off). Kind of long and empty, gay fighting scenes. On the plus side, the Bilbo scene with Smaug was v.good. Somewhat entertaining but a big step down from LOTR 6/10.

Watching The double life of Veronique atm, so far promising movie and Irene Jacob wow... so beautiful inlove.gif
