What Movies Are You Watching Lately - Page 198

I took my daughter to the midnight showing of House of 1000 Corpses and then last night we saw the original 1950s Godzilla (Gojira). It was great to see it on the big screen. There was a very diverse crowd from little kids, grad student to much older adults. I love independent theaters.

Honestly, I didn't care for it much the first time. Then I watched it again a few months later and was able to appreciate the jokes much more. This has been the case for a few people I know.

How old is your daughter? House of a Thousand Corpses is pretty intense for younger viewers I would think.

I've seen the Big Lebowski three times and still struggle to stay awake during it. There are some mildly funny parts but it doesn't work as a comedy and there's nothing else to it. I feel the same way about most Coen brothers movies.

I've seen it twice and hate it.

Fargo is good but overrated. Same with Miller's Crossing and I like that one even less. No Country For Old Men is in the same ballpark. I think I liked Burn After Reading more than all three, but I've only seen that once

A Serious Man is my favorite, love that one.

One man's hilarious is another man's potty humor.

Edit: I think Big Lebowski is pretty fucking funny myself, but it definitely grew on me with repeated viewings.

The key to appreciating Coen brothers movies, for me, is to pay attention to the vernacular that they've chosen to work in for that particular film - they have a remarkable ability to work across genres while paying respect to that genres origins and progenitors.

To me, No Country for Old Men is their masterpiece. A brilliant movie that I think will be watchable 50 years from now.

I rather enjoyed Lebowski, even upon the first viewing. Did not care for Burn After Reading. No Country For Old Men was an insta-classic.

That's definitely my least favorite by them- too depressing.

I completely agree regarding the vernacular of Coen Bros films. It was definitely the best part about True Grit.

My favorite? Just might be Miller's Crossing.

To me, that ability to learn the language of a genre so completely that they can create something completely fresh and new, while remaining within the structure of that genre, is what makes them the best directors of the last few decades. Nobody else, IMO, has that ability - Spike Lee comes close, but puts too much of his own spin into his movies, so that it is always so obvious that you are watching a Spike Lee Joint.

I was blown away by Blood Simple when I saw it for the first time in 1984, and I continue to be blown away by them as their work has matured and deepened.
