To me, that ability to learn the language of a genre so completely that they can create something completely fresh and new, while remaining within the structure of that genre, is what makes them the best directors of the last few decades. Nobody else, IMO, has that ability - Spike Lee comes close, but puts too much of his own spin into his movies, so that it is always so obvious that you are watching a Spike Lee Joint.
I was blown away by Blood Simple when I saw it for the first time in 1984, and I continue to be blown away by them as their work has matured and deepened.
