Don Siegel's version from '56 is the first of 4 movie adaptations of the novel from '55 (so far and not counting the version from The Asylum). Was actually planning on watching the '78 version and thought I'd just see a bit of this, to get a feel for it, but it efficiently drew me in from the first scene - well worth it. Was shot in 19 days and has Sam Peckinpah in a small role.
