Uh....the entire thing? It looked like it was written by a 9th grader who was trying to make a point about how racism is like, totally bad.

Really? I felt it was a pretty good film (My wife bought it not long after it came out but I actually had never watched it until last year). The film's goal (which it achieved) was simply to get individuals to think about the assumptions they make regarding other people/cultures. Are those assumptions based on stereotypes/prejudices or all they based on real life experience? And do those assumptions prove to be true for everyone you encounter from that group you are making generalizations about?

Although I don't disagree that the film's goals were achieved, I don't think that necessarily means it was a good film. Race relations are a nuanced and complex issue and Haggis' movie was about as lacking in nuance and complexity as it could be. It was just a bunch of semi-three dimensional characters grappling with some out of touch white guy's vision of "race", which was pretty inaccurate to begin with.

+1 on these. There are so many lines that sound canned and unrealistic. The characters were less human than they were megaphones for the writer to deal out his redemptive, pithy thoughts on race. This is getting into the political side of things, but IMO the racialist perspective (believing that race is a real category, that it determines or predicts who someone can be) denies humanity. The film toes that line instead of considering the characters as whole people with idiosyncratic motivations, attitudes, thoughts and feelings.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, I could be off on this. I mostly remember the sloganeering and catch-phrases though.

watched Hanna last night, i liked it overall and thought it was pretty entertaining, but the style was just a bit too similar to Run Lola Run, imo. I realize it's heavily inspired by numerous films but the inspiration from this one is just a bit over the top.

saw Hangover 2 last week, was kinda funny but nowhere near as good as part 1. also saw Fast 5 based on a recommendation (thought all the others in the series were awful/wouldn't have bothered watching this for any reason) but it was actually pretty decent. I liked the fact that it took place in Brazil and had some interesting characters/music to go along with this.

Omg. Are you serious? Run Lola Run is my favourite movie ever. I actually have Hanna downloaded and will watch it tonight! I was hoping for a decent action movie but after your comparison, I really hope you haven't sullied my expectations for this film.

I think you'll still enjoy it, your description of "decent action movie" is pretty accurate. it's only during certain scenes that you'll feel like your watching Run Lola Run over again

the chemical bros. soundtrack (which is good) probably has more to do with this than anything though

Oh, I see. Well, yeah I figure it didn't have the exact same structure or anything. I mean, when I watched the trailer for Hanna, Run Lola Run didn't immediately pop into my head. Thanks for the heads-up though.

Bela Tarr's "˜The Turin Horse', last night. Wow! What a way to kick off my Sydney Film Festival journey for 2011. Tonight:

I finally watched Hanna last night. I really liked it. And while I don't think it surpassed Run Lola Run, it definitely had that vibe to it. The camerawork was amazing and the soundtrack really added to the tension in a good way. Unsurprisingly, the plot felt more like a means to an end but weak storytelling aside, it was a great film.

I'm on an epic ancient warfare binge, watched Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, and Braveheart. Any others in this theme I should check out?
