Rocco and his brothers - Luchino Visconti (1960)
This is a most interesting movie, beautiful filmed and an emotional powerful story about the five brothers arriving in Milan with their mother. She has recently become a widow and is trying to build a better life for her sons than in the poor south where they used to live. It's a movie about disintegration and decay, and about not being able to change attitude in a time of great change in the Italian society, and it's about the strong forces within the family and what happens when there is too much strain on the brothers adaptive abilities.
Rocco is actually not the most interesting character, his brother Simone and his selfdestruction, his overambitions, and the relationship between him, the hooker Nadia and Rocco is the epicenter that drives the tragedy forward. Where Simone is on his way down in anger, so is Rocco is going the same way in his kindness and willingness to sacrifice his own needs to those of his brothers.
This is a movie with neorealistic traits, and almost operaesque feelings, but done in a way that is total enjoyable and touching.
Music by Nino Rota, and photo by Giuseppe Rotunno; also much used by Fellini.
No HBO on demand in Oz sadly.
