What Movies Are You Watching Lately

Alright, The Hobbit wasn't bad but it wasn't good by any means either. Too long, weird looking. I remembered most of the book so I'm not sure whether that's part of the reason why I wasn't captured at all by the movie. I appreciate it but wouldn't rank it higher than 6/10 or so. I'm sure it can please a few fellows. Often had a feeling of cinematography in video games. The opening scene somehow looked poorly animated (that is not to say that video game's cinematography looks bad; they often look fantastic nowadays).

Django Unchained on the other hand was pretty damn good. I very much like most of the actors and Tarantino so that's definitely a plus. Loved the acting -- once again a splendid performance of Mr. Waltz --, story was solid. Maybe a tad long. Anyhow, very good movie and I wouldn't mind watching it again.

And nope, I didn't watch P&P again. Instead, I started reading the book.

Pretty good flick. Well directed. It was a piss poor story when I was a kid and the film was pathetically named 'The Canadian Caper'. Affleck slicks it up a lot with a bullshit ending stolen right from The Year of Living Dangerously, a far better film.

Golden Globes? WTF! Must be slim pickings. I thought ZDT and Lincoln much better, but I love procedural movies, both of which they are.

BTW, the worse CGI I've seen in a long time. Clooney really cheaped out. The Atlas mountains look like a bad B movie matte and the Swissair 747 is hilarious.

Saw Django. It was good but honestly I'd have to put it near the bottom on my fav Tarantino flicks.

The "raid" scene though was absolutely awesome.

After seeing it I sat down with an acquaintance who fled Iran in 1980 under a false passport. He and his friend were detained at the airport, but he managed to talk his way past while his friend was taken into another room. He said he was sitting on the plane staring at the back of the seat in front of him too petrified to talk or look at anyone as he expected to be dragged off the plane at any time. When they finally took flight he burst into tears. He guesses his friend played for enough time to allow the plane to take off. He doesn't know for certain as no one saw his friend again.

He also said that the Argo airport scene was pretty much bang on to what he experienced.

The Impossible
9/10

No subplot, no maudlin, just a great disaster film about the power of nature and family. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor are excellent. The three boys are brilliant.

The CGI is astounding and the score is superb.

Not for the faint of heart.

Watched Ted last night and it was surprisingly funny. I had low expectations but really enjoyed it.

Silver Linings Playbook
9/10

This is the best movie by David O. Russell since the brilliant Three Kings.

There's a lot going on here. The subtext is the serious business of mental illness, but the frame of the movie is a quirky relationship that morphs into something quite profound.

Russell had twenty goes at the script. Revisionism can work. The script is wonderful. And, so is the acting. Jennifer Lawrence is superb as is Bradley Cooper. Nice to see De Niro not phoning it in. He's great, too.

As dance is the motivating factor in this particular form of romantic redemption, the song choices were important and are spot on. The amazing Dylan/Cash 1969 version of Girl from the North Country, Brubeck's Unsquare Dance and songs by Stevie Wonder feature.

Original and a must see.

Watched Dredd today, awesome violence and action. I really liked it.
