Tonsillitis OUCH - Page 2

I fill my soup with lots of hot sauce. The combined power of salty broth and capsaicin seems to be my own personal best relief... at least for a few hours. Good luck, I have lots of throat problems myself and know how much this sucks.

See a doctor! I used to get strep throat on a semi regular basis back in my early twenties (twice a year almost) and antibiotics cleared it up. Thankfully I have not had it since.

Tried that, but it was tough! Just going for broth now.

Thanks for the advice. I actually contacted my doctor friend this morning. He has confirmed that it's viral tonsillitis. If I get a fever or have difficulty breathing he told me to contact him immediately. Anyway, talk about the worst pain... Tonsillitis sucks... The pain is some of the worst I've ever had. The only other time I've had worse pain was when I had typhoid. That was terrible. I'm so lucky I've had these two weeks off.

Don't mean to needlessly bump this thread, especially since I'm completely well now... but just a quick update if anyone happened to search this up later. It turns out I had an abscess behind my left tonsil (Peritonsillar Abscess)... which is why I was in so much pain. It kept on growing (unbeknown to any of us) until I was in so much pain I looked inside my mouth and pressed on my tonsil. It burst by just pressing (lightly) on it with a finger. The relief was almost immediate. My doctor gave me antibiotics for 10 days to make sure I stayed well. He said that since I didn't have a fever, he didn't think I had it. It sucked so much... but I'm well now and feeling fantastic. I've heard from others who have had a Peritonsillar Abscess that the pain is some of the worst pain they've ever experienced. I can definitely second this, although it is most certainly second to when I had Typhoid a few years ago. Thanks for the input everyone.

the scary thing is if it hurts so bad that you can't even swallow medicine. its one of the more common reasons for hospital admissions because patients can't take take antibiotics orally and need to have an IV set up for intra venous routes for antibiotics. the couple rotations i've done in third world countries adults actually can die from it... no food or water (because of the excruciating pain during swallowing), fever, and eventually sepsis (blood infection) then they come in too late... the sad thing is when poor mothers don't want to take their kids in with the same scenario.

EDIT: I see this isn't current, so nevermind When I got mono, I had almost no symptoms aside from a terrible sore throat. I got steroids for it at the time, though they didn't do much. As others have said, strep throat is another possibility. If you let strep go too long, it can damage your heart. Way back when I was in middle school, I used to get strep throat multiple times a year. It was not always accompanied by a high fever or many other symptoms. I would get to a doctor for a strep test at least.
