GJ, thanks for the informative list. I've only visited Spiros. Who do you think offer the best quality and fitting among these tailors? I guess they are quite similar in term of prices?

I am looking for an overcoat maker, in particular.

There are two passing references to Spiros Tailor in Toronto in Gj555's and FCS's posts but neither comment on the quality of his work. His Danforth Avenue shop is nearby and I wonder if anyone has direct experience of his work?

I need to build a new work wardrobe largely from scratch and was contempleting Hemrajani or Mr. Ned but wonder if I'd be better to pay a little more than I would at mytailor.com and benefit from local fittings. As I have to buy four or five suits, my upper limit is about $1200CDN ($1100US) per suit and I would prefer to come in closer to $1000.

Do any of my Toronto bretheren (or visitors) have a recommendation for me re Spirois or another fine tailor in the city?

I am thinking about ordering a suit from Thornhill Tailors. I was told that the jacet was made by by Frank all hand done canvass and the pants sent out. Were you satisfied with the style contemporary, and fit? I agree the fabrics are not high end but not bad for the price.

I have no direct experience of my own to offer, but you may wish to read this thread on AAAC about a recent Spiros MTM suit (if you haven't done so already).

See my post earlier in this thread from October 7, 2006 on Thornhill Tailors. Pants are sent out and are great value. The suit I have from Frank from TH tailors has a mix of canvass and fusing. When I ordered the suit I did not ask and only presumed it was all canvas. In my experience you absolutely have to specify no fusing. You will also need to specify pic stitching or else he won't do it.

About 1.5 years ago, I went to another tailor to have a suit made. That tailor told me that Frank does not make his own jackets. I never confirmed but you should double check.

Business conservative suit. 3 button. 1 pleat trousers.

The quarters on the suit are way too closed. Sleeves also were too wide at the cuffs (this was fixed). Fusing below the second button. Tailor initially forgot that I had asked for sewn lapels (did a quick fix and you could tell).

Pants fit perfectly and look great. I purchased 2 pair of pants and they were very good price.

Lee, the proprietor (owner? employee?) was patient though. He also offered me 10% off my purchase (coupon) when he saw I was vacillating because of the prices. It's probably worth asking him for a first-time shopper coupon too if you're there.

Too bad the ExToggery on Merton St. just south of Davisville Subway closed, it sometimes had nice stuff. Thrifting in TO. is pretty bad, as I'm lazy to hit up the Goodwills and Salvation Armies... or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?

Oh, also, Broadway is just a few blocks north of Eglinton, not halfway to Lawrence. Halfway to Lawrence on the west side is the Australian Boot Co. where I tried on my RM Williams Craftsman last year!

I have been to OTC and I can agree with your assessment completely. The store does not sell on consignment, they have big sings that say they buy clothes. The prices SHOCKED me considering all the clothing was used. Also, there was nothing in the way of my size, in either shirts or suits. The few things they did have in 38/15 were pretty bad. I'm sure they have the potential to get nice things in, I've just never seen it in there before, and with the prices the way they are, $150 for a Loro Piana shirt, I could pay a few bucks more and get one brand new on sale at Holts, which is also overpriced to begin with.

it is hit and miss and you have to go often to see what is in.

prices are negotiable, depending on how much you plan on buying and how good of haggler you are.

Just to add - I'm a young professional who doesn't have a lot of time to go shop around for clothing. There is another hidden gem in the downtown business district. The store is called Fifth on King and they made my most recent business suit - she's a beaut, midnite navy. A lot of of the sartorial details such as functional cuffs, free floating canvass, hand stitched button holds, boat-shaped welt pockets and the list goes on. The staff there was patient and very knowledable. I'm planning to purchase my next "staples" suits here because their prices only start at $700! I was very impressed that were is a store that offers such good value.

Any idea where to find decent OTR suits in Toronto around Christmas time? I heard Bay have alot to choose from but I have no idea about the prices. A Marks & Spencer Autograph suit in the UK costs around Â£200 (including tax) which is around $400 Cdn. Will $400Cdn get a better suit than M&S in Toronto during the Christmas sales time?
