Murray's has very, very good hold.....too good....which makes it a nightmare to wash out and it's super greasy. A very little goes an awful long way with that stuff. It's a petroleum based product, but it's very hard and stiff. Much like Dax, It's really cheap and easy to find in stores, but your scalp will forever a hold a grudge against you for abusing it so.
Crew is water soluble, which means that it has very weak hold. If you have thin hair, Crew pomade will do the trick for a couple hours, but it tends to dry quickly and lose it's affectiveness. The thicker your hair, the less effect this watery substance will have. It's also more expensive than other brands.
I use Johnny B every once in a while. They have original/medium hold and Xtra hold. Both are strong and will give your hair that wet look, while keeping everything in place for days. Unlike Murray's and Dax, when your hair musses up, you can take a wet comb and comb everything back in place perfectly without scalping yourself. Johnny B is about as expensive as Crew, but it actually holds as good as Murray's and washes out as easily as Crew. When washing your hair, apply shampoo, rinse, use plently of conditioner (any kind will do), leave on hair for 3-to-6 min, and wash off with warm water.......all gone.....hair will be as dry and fluffy as ever.
